Green Goblin

I'm excited to get this one going. Got some cuttings to start this weekend. WM#1 is still the best tasting adriatic I have, so I'm stoked this one might be similar and earlier.

You like WM#1 better than Angelito? For me it's a tough call... but some guy who's name I won't mention (rhymes with frigologist) asked me what me what my favourite fig is earlier... now I'm feeling very confused and a little anxious....

@figologist

I have about 15 Adriatics, and Angelito is one of them, but it is new. So I haven't tasted that one yet.
Battaglia Green and Green Michurinska are both in the ground and delicious figs, but WM#1 is still the winner based on flavor alone IMO. It is very sweet, but also has delicious acidity that gives it that 'something extra.' The Adriatics are generally berry flavored, but that is across a spectrum of berry flavors such as strawberry. WM#1 has some raspberry notes that I love. Prosciutto is similar but with less acidity. Here's some fig pix for fun...

I like that WM1 has a bit of a tougher or chewier skin, so you have to give it a few extra chews which helps bring out those flavors. Late in the season I had a few that dried up on the tree, which is hard to do for me and the humidity, those things were total flavor grenades!!

I recently scraped both my knees begging Padsfan for a couple of cuttings. All of you have spoken up about the similarity of this variety to the flavor, look, and the ripening date of WM #1, and other adriatics . My attraction to Green Goblin has nothing to do with this. I mean yes it being early is attractive. But it's not like those other varieties. It's productivity is absolutely astonishing. The look is completely unique. The way it ripens a great number of figs so close together. So many things about this wonderful Green Goblin variety attracts me. It's sheer Beauty does make It really appear quite unique. I am growing these other figs, but honestly Green Goblin seems like a miracle of productivity, and a marvel beautiful to behold. If I compare her to a woman it's quite clear I have a crush on her. She's just not like the other girls I know.

In the Adriatic battle for supremacy I have it Angelito number 1 WM#1 number 2 and Unk Prosciutto number 3. All are inground and at least 2 years old. Unk Prosciutto is 3 years old. I have a couple first year Green Goblins and the fruit from the first year trees is on par with any of the others. If they get any better in their second year someone will get bumped of the podium.

@387PETE Can you give us a ranking in earliest in the Great Adriatic Showdown? That is a huge factor for us short season growers who use no headstarts. Oak St Unk has been reported to be as tasty as WM#1 but earlier. Any personal insights on that one? Its an East coast unknown thats not widely distributed.

The green figs and yellow/white figs always taste the best when they look the worst as your pictures confirm.

Man, that is just gold if you find one! I still remember the first time I discovered a little WM#1 shriveled like a raisin and dried in the tree. It rocked my world. Funny how that moment is still such a clear memory.

@387PETE I hope I have the opportunity to test Angelito myself. It's been my 'holy grail' fig for years. I had some bad luck with it in the past. Really looking forward to this growing season. Realistically, I know it will be a few years before I have a final conclusion, but it sure will be fun along the way

I don't have Oak St Unk. It looks like all the Adriatics ripen within a week or two of each other. For me that's around the first week of September. I'm in zone 8a.

It is different and have compared it to WM1, Harry's Crete, Strawberry Verte, Angelito, Adriatic JH, vasilika sika VS and LSU Strawberry. Definitely not a CdD but on par with them. I added about every adriatic I could find this year Mgm, paradiso bronze vs, toni-anne calabrese, Green Greek and Green Michurinska and Unk Prosciutto and Oak st UNK. Maybe there are a few more I'm not aware of.
Chris is a smart man to send it out to have it tested first before selling it trying to avoid it being the next hot fig.
One the neck of my figs in the picture you can see a letter that represents each fig. W H SV and GG.

@MattK Can you rank your top 3 or 5 Adriatics so far? @387PETE ranked Angelito, WM #1 and Unk Prosciutto as his top 3 so far. Any sense of earlier or do they all ripen around the same time? BTW what is Mgm?

It is hard to say and not to put down or hype up any figs. I would rank them as so but that could change this year. Green Goblin, WM #1, Strawberry Verte, Harry's Crete, Battaglia Green I forgot about.
Each variety had a fig the was comparable to the other though but I'm listing them as their consistency to produce a great fig. I did notice Green Goblin ripened the 8 figs it had in a short window.
Mgm was meant to be mercedes gem and I did pick up a few others Sandy lake UNK and Sister Madeline Green Greek. My goal is to graft them all on the same tree and I should have a better comparison then.

@MattK Ive got a SandyLake going too. Its showing me big finger leaves as a vigorously growing rooted cutting. It will be interesting to see how close it gets grouped with Adriatic family, I have feeling it will be an outlayer to the family like Green Michurinska

Some say you cannot classify Green Michurinska as an Adriatic, but it is a green fig with a red interior.
It is earlier than all of them here in Georgia....or at least all the Adriatics that I have grown.
