Iranian candy

Joe, do you give your Iranian Candy a headstart? What varieties do you grow in our climate without any headstart that can produce a decent harvest? I'd imagine this one would be one of them.

It doesn't get much of a head start. Maybe a bit of time in the pop up greenhouse but that's about it. off the top of my head I can reliably take these from the garage straight outside with maybe a bit of shuffling if it calls for a freeze after I get green growth.

I would like to hear from @TorontoJoe Joe details on his in ground I-258.
When it break dormancy, figs form, ripens, and how much or many figs he harvest vs. How much stay on the tree by first frost.

it normally gets a head start in the way of my putting up and temporary greenhouse and soaking the root zone with warm water. last spring I was dealing with an injured hand and couldn't do anything after uncovering. The tree produced heavily and I would think it set a few hundred figs... of which I was able to ripen over half before it was just too cold to ripen any more.

Next season will be more interesting as the tree has gotten so big that I wasn't able to keep any budding wood. I had to take it right down. So I'm going to have to make an extra effort to get new shoots to emerge from the older growth.

Thanks. It will be my first year trying to ripen a few varieties without a headstart. Hope to get good results.

That is very interesting, Joe. Thanks for sharing.
On average, when do you unwrap it? which I guess aligns with the beginning of the head start.
Also, how long before the first batch of figlets form?

While in ground trees don’t get as early a head start as potted trees, they do catch up quick and end up outperforming potted trees.
Especially in ground trees that are well established.
