What fig would you not part with ?

CDD Roja and a local fig called A street strawberry Unk. I was gonna get by to take some cuttings of it, but I think it’s already died to the ground since it for it single digits. Strawberry verte was really good, and so was Bourjasotte Grise and Azores Dark. Figs that are borderline getting removed because they are not vigorous, slow growers, little figs, splitters, or bland: CDD Cuitat, Black Manzanita, LSU strawberry, Harry’s Crete, I’m sure there will be more.
Well that’s good to hear. I have an Azores dark in my collection. Strawberry verte sounds really good. I’ve been trying to get my hands on one.

Italian 258 hands down last year. It is potted was one of the first to ripen, was very productive, and of my collection is one of the best tasting. We’ll see if it stays that way next year, it’s fourth year. My unknown Sicilian Black produces from early season to frost and just pumps out the figs. It’s a Mt. Etna I will not part with (same thing with Takoma Violet and RLBV). That said Sumard is being tested in ground as a Mt. Etna replacement. Peter’s Honey is my best Honey fig so far - productive and wonderful. But I also won’t get rid of Longue D’Aout ever. Green Michurenska is my Green Adriatic-like that I won’t dump either. Oh and RDB. Too many I won’t get rid of they all fill a specific niche. In fact, if ai could only have one tree it would be a tree grafted with 10-20 varieties.

I love my LDA - in fact, it love it so much, Im making a copy of it, just in case!

Personally, I need to have a mix of figs for different reasons. First and foremost, I have to have the humble workhorses. Niagara Black, Florea etc. They're easy to grow and very good figs. Sure, nobody is paying top dollar for them but IMO they're the sort of fig that everyone should start with. That fig might be different for your climate but the idea is that you get ripening figs earlier and in good numbers so, you're eating figs! It's easy to get caught up, but I feel these figs should be the priority for any new grower.

Next, are the Legendary Figs. The I-258, Smith, Black Madeira and other "top-shelf" figs that might be a bit tougher to grow but oh baby! They're the stuff that dreams are made of!

From there, the specialty figs. Off the top of my head.... figs like Siblawi, that have different and interesting flavours. Banana, cherry, peach... and some say even bubblegum.

Finally, the new, hot Haute Couture figs. I won't name them but these are the unicorns. The, "hard-to-get varieties". The ones that maybe aren't quite proven, but show so much promise of being special. These figs might be outstanding... but perhaps not so much for you. To a degree, it's speculation.... which for some, can be fun

Just my $0.02

Full disclosure... I have figs from all of these groups.

*I left out one category. I have a couple of figs that have never, and probably will never produce good figs for me here. They're family heirlooms and because of this I grow them for personal, nostalgic reasons..... I don't care if they fruit. I just like having them close to me.

If I was forced to have only one variety, Smith. No matter where in the country you go, it’ll produce for you, it’ll ripen soon enough for you, weather/spoilage resistant, and flavor is good. But the question is a little broad. There’s too many parameters to judge a fig by.
Interesting. Well fingers crossed I have success on my current smith cuttings

Oh man lots of good choices. I just had to throw out my GM cutting. It rotted out sadly. I’m hoping my I-258 will be successful in rooting though.

Ahhhhh I love this post. Thank youuu. Very inspiring and interesting. I’m hoping to get a good collection all together and have done true power horses. Just gotta get some cuttings to succeed.

It took me a few years. It felt like forever. When I got my first ripe figs, my life changed. Stick to it and your patience will be rewarded... I promise! :)

Honey fig it’s a tie between Barbillone and Pingo De Mel but I’m also going to include Golden Riverside.

Purple berry fig it’s a tie between Italian 258 and Figo Preto but I’m also going to include Ondata.

Green berry fig it’s a tie between Angelito and Paradiso Siro but I’m also going to include Cosme Manyo.

Sugarish fig it’s a tie between Black Celeste and LSU Tiger but I’m also going to include Stallion.

If I had to choose one it would probably be a tie between Italian 258 and Paradiso Siro.

If you put a gun to my head and made me choose between the two I’d have to just hope the gun was empty and you are bluffing lol 😂

Agh lol. Worth it. Dude a lot of people are saying I258. That’s worrisome because I don’t believe my cutting is working out. Darn. I appreciate the good input though. Thank you!

My mature Smith tree would be one I couldn't give up. It's delicious, productive, early-ish, ripens figs until the end of the season, able to dry on the tree, and somewhat split-resistant.

I'm rooting Cessac this year and can't wait to compare it with Smith.
Oh man!! That’s good. I have a cessac cutting I’m starting to lose hope in, it won’t root but I’m trying not to give up on it. Haha.

Limited experience here but my alma... Just because she introduced me to this wonderful figgy world and you lovely folks even though for two years I called her Celeste and abused her by not pruning and not fertilizing ... Waiting for this cold snap to prune....
And this year I had white Madeira #1 who woulda think it would make me question why have strawberries when I can get figs? Loved 😍 the few I got. Best than Adriatic JH... So I'd choose WM#1
And i had a few Olympian and NSDC and some boring thing I don't know the name of. I think it's VDB or RDB or mission but it wasn't great and it had reddish figs on the smaller side and it will likely go. I'm growing fig cuttings of all of those so I can figure out what it was and have a good proper tree to see if I like it for real ...
What I can't wait for... Smith ... Also have multiple cutting from different sources doing well. DSJG just cause the two cuttings I have are BEAUTIFUL... And the 10 or so different honey figs to see what i like best....
And definitely Celeste because I have three cuttings of real Celeste that mother wise gave me - so thankful - that are looking Great 😃 so alma is alma and Celeste is Celeste!
Plus a little miss figgy from one of our lovely members that I just received and am anxiously awaiting !!! Got a perfect pot for it and a prized patio spot!!!
Man what a year! These posts should be closed to New first year people with excitement so you don't have to read through all my happiness!

Nooooo we love the newbies !!
That’s exciting. I have two very healthy WM#1 cuttings rooted. I hope they flourish this year. Also pushing these smith cuttings I have. Hoping for success. Thank you for your fun post!
