The figbid rabbit hole....

This tread is neat, it's kind of going the same way my Figbid searchs progress., A splinter here, and a tangent there.

I'm looking at the recent auction for White Baca and I can't help but think that I have a fig that looks exactly like it in my collection and my variety is an old one that's been around a while but not circulated much. Even that distinctive flat, layed over stem. I'm not trying to be one of those people that say that the new variety is just an old variety, but I wish I had a couple better pictures of mine, and I wish had been born a women so I could order a Peach Bellini, in order to draw a better comparison.

There is a thread on the other forum regarding some comparisons. Yellow Neches which use to show up in older Texas nursery catalogs in the early 1900s but was known in the southwest and supposedly was brought from Virginia. The characteristics of the fruit shape and flavor matches that of white baca. 505-H also shows similarities to Yellow Neches. 505-H was an heirloom tree close 100 years old and has been shared by Fig Gazer. They display the same fruit shape, color, early ripeness, stone fruit flavor and size.

I'm not knocking down white baca as i trust it's an heirloom variety from an older tree in New Mexico. Possible that the Yellow Neches made it's way west with settlers. Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and eventually California.

It's also possible they are all different but under the same umbrella like Mt Edna/Chicago Hardy varieties such as: Conde, Crozes, Angelo's Dark, Malta Black, etc. All under the same umbrella but some show differences in characteristics.

The same can be said for Sicilian 33. I don't have any others in my collection that I can compare it to but if i had to try, I would say Black Celeste is its closest cousin. I grow and have ripened it as well.

I’d guess that the hype and originality of the tree will persist for the next year so the buyers can recoup costs, then once in more people’s hands it’ll become as you suggest - similar to known varieties.

505-H, Yellow Neches, The Sisters, and White Baca are no doubt the same. Well, with very little doubt. They are all heirloom varieties that look identical to each other. There may be variation because of mother trees adapting over time to their given areas, but they are nearly identical. They all match Condit’s description of Yellow Neches as well. So…

I HAVE GROWN 505-H AND THE SISTERS SIDE BY SIDE (THE SISTERS FOUND BY THE FIG HUNTER } AND THEY ARE NOT THE SAME ! THE main distngwishing factor of 505-H is when very matchure has 50-80 % MULE FIGS with the other 20-50 % cole de dame style necks !!!! is YELLOW NECHES,WHITE BACA like that ???????

Yep, they are all known for that. It’s one of the distinguishing factors mentioned by Condit for Yellow Neches and is noted in pictures.

Mark/Venturabananas said The Sisters seemed the same and they do seem to have similar characteristics in some pictures, including the thicker neck. Pollination changes it a lot, which is also noted about Yellow Neches.

I’m growing three of the varieties, but have kept two of them in small pots so those two haven’t grown much to fruit. But I’m planning to up pot them this year and hopefully will have my own fruit to compare. But so far, pics of all 4 look very similar to each other.

Granted, there is not a lot known about White Baca, but what is known and the pictures that have been shown look pretty identical to Yellow Neches.

From photo's. The white baca does look a lot like Sister's.
Now are they the same? I guess we will find out in a year or two.
Sister's is a good fig. And the flavor description of baca match's that of sister's.
Not sure about the others as I do not have them. But they all seem so close that you only need one of them.
Unless you are studying them to find small differences.

Yeah, that’s why I didn’t bother to up pot my Sisters or Yellow Neches even though I paid quite a bit for them, though not White Baca prices. 😀 They were clearly very similar. I already had 505-H and that one mattered more to me because it was given to me.

SEEMS we talked about this before ? Are you RosyPosy ? IF so were you able to do any thing with the little JANET'S UNK. i sent you ? Looking forward to your YELLOW NECHES,505-H,THE SISTERS ,Exparements .
Yeah, it was talked about on OF before. I am RosyPosy. Yep, went into the fridge for a short bit, getting ready to pot it and a couple others in the next few days. Thank you again for it!

I even dangled a Sicilian 33 and Nero di rocca. No deal. 😔
Funny enough I had dangled Nero di Rocca to Marco for White Baca when he wasn't sure if his Roca Nero (that was renamed by The Fig Commander) was Nero di Rocca but he never responded...

Now it's part of my "Lost Interest In" list along with Cosme Manyo and a CA Seedling - after soo many seasons wanting them.but never getting them I finally got over them lol!
