On a personal level, it makes sense to keep only one if you can't tell the difference among them. But it is probably a good idea to wait a few years for the trees to mature first before making that decision.Maybe that was it? I do remember though, this person had gotten the latest and greatest most popular Mt Etna varieties and wasn't blown away from what he already had in the ground. From the tone of his voice you were able to tell he was disappointed, not that they were not good but moreso that they weren't anything better than what he already had in that type.
I do know Ross at first didn't think SMR wasn't aything special until the 2nd or 3rd year, then the opposite happened with the Malta Black, at first he thought it was a superior Mt Etna then he wasn't sure about it, he did know that the Malta Black liked to be extra hot and extra dry compared to other Mt. Etna's to taste better.
It's a trial and error for any of these types. I think for most of us is to get to the one's you really like either for taste, production or in many cases for sentimental value.
Gawd, I wish I could remember, and I do watch his video's.
Sorry not following, triples? These are triples?? I used to grow singles, then doubles..
They are different varieties. Singles only have 1 layer of petals, doubles 2 and triples are multi layers ones like yours.Sorry not following, triples?
Maybe the flavors vary from tree to tree. The first figs I got this year tasted 100% like honeydew melon. The figs I get now off a second tree taste less like melon but the fully ripe ones taste like eating strawberry jam. I've heard people describe figs tasting like strawberry jam but I've never heard Celeste tasting like strawberry jam. Either way I like them fully ripe or less ripe. But I have never noticed the brown sugar flavor that is usually the way Celeste is described. That being said, I don't have a refined palette.
This is the Mavra Sika cutting you sent me. It's already growing figs.LOL yes I did propagate one or two Mavra Sika cuttings shortly after I sent that batch to you. I'm still stuck in LA. I work with the gardening partner named Sean. We've split the Berkeley CA orchard up between us I will ask him how they're doing. Last time we talked I was all about Green Goblin, Ondata, Boysenberry Blush, and exquisito. Angelito Too many to get an update every day
Beauties! Enjoy!
I first started giving the rooted cuttings Alaska fish fertilizer when they were smaller. I noticed every time I gave them the fish juice there was a burst of growth. Then I started alternating between 1/2 strength 24-8-16 water soluble fertilizer, and fish juice. I did that a few times and then gave them a dose of full strength 24-8-16 water soluble one time. Now I give them the same thing I give most of my trees. I alternate between 2/3 strength water soluble, and fish juice(approx every12 days) and about once every 6 weeks I mix some granular organic 3-5-6 into the top of the soil. There are a couple of trees that have a lot of figs and I give those ones 18-18-21 water soluble instead of 24-8-16. When I up pot I mix worm castings and perlite into miracle grow potting mix. I have recently purchased some blood meal to work into the feeding sometime. I don't know if what I'm giving them has the calcium and magnesium that they need.@ETXfigs it's so beautiful looking, can I ask what you are fertilizing this fig tree with? It looks like it's r,eady to take full strength synthetic fertilizer now. But please don't over water this baby fig tree to do it. It still won't appreciate over hydration. The salts in the synthetic fertilizer Force fluids into the cells ,of the fig tree. Caring with it NPK and micro nutrients. This will cause explosive growth with the leaves, and stems thickening the trucks of the two branches. It's time for a full strength synthetic fertilizer dose. After the effects of the full strength synthetic dose is readily apparent you can start alternating between organic and synthetic fertilization programs. This creates those lovely thick stem branches that make for huge cuttings later in autumn. Also the thick branches you will want to hang your scaffold branches on. It's time to pH your water to neutral. You can use the water droplet pH test kit only 7 to $10 at any Hydro Store. Also two small bottles of pH Up and Down to adjust the fluid uptake to neutral. Time for supplementation of calcium magnesium as well Of course that's just one newbies opinion.
The Mavra Sika is a Mt Etna. There is a Lou Monti video and he compares it to the Malta Black that is growing right beside it. He says that his Mavra Sika has bigger and more breba than the Malta Black. If Mavra Sika really is a good one, I don't think I will need any other Mt Etna.LOL yes I did propagate one or two Mavra Sika cuttings shortly after I sent that batch to you. I'm still stuck in LA.
