Favorite Fig 2024

I've noticed several people posting in different places (ie... Facebook, other forums) about a favorite fig they grew this season. Thought it would be a good topic for this year and following years. Tell us what your favorite fig was this season (2024). Pics and descriptions are welcomed, but not neccessary. I'll go first 🙂

Of the roughly 20 varieties I grow, my favorite fig variety for 2024 was Des Tres Esplets, hands down. My tree was rooted spring of 2024 and started setting figs in late May. I got 4 figs from the tree in total, starting mid August, and every one of them was outstanding. Non splitting, good form and color, and a straight forward flavor. The last fig, I harvested in weather that was cooling off, but was still as sweet as the first. I swear I tasted peanut butter/jelly.

Not sure if a fig can have a nutty flavor, but after I took the first bite, I stopped and looked down at the rest of the fig in my hand and decided right then and there, that DTE has found a permanent place in my collection. I can't imagine it getting any better but it's only it's first season. Can't wait for 2025.

Did you have a fig that made a good first impression or that is a tried and true favorite of you and/or your family, year after year?

I have about 20 trees in ground, most finishing up their second year. Honestly I like them all, and am enjoying the variety; however my favorite fig this year was definitely Figo Preto. I got it because I had read it was similar to Black Madeira, but more vigorous; then later I read it was actually the same tree with a different name. Not sure which is right, but my goodness is it tasty. It is a slow grower for me compared to the others I planted at the same time and treated the same (fertilizer, water, etc), and just had a few figs. It was my fig with the deepest, richest flavor; I only got two to eat, the critters got the other five on the tree. Looking forward to a full crop next year!

It was such a lousy year fruit wise... The majority of my trees did not set figs until very late and so I didn’t get ripe figs from many varieties this year. The only ones that really ripened were Mt. Etnas and some Dottato type varieties, and a few other outliers.. Kesariani was probably best for 2024. CdDN actually ripened some too, but in colder weather so they weren’t quite as tasty as they could be.

I still have not tried DTE, although I did manage to kill a tree. It’s tough for me to pick a single stand out favourite….. but I can certainly name a few

I-258 remains at the top of my list. Many of you have seen my on ground tree. It just produces so many amazing figs and it checks all the boxes.

While I want to try it on the ground as well, Vince #3 has been blowing me away. So early and so productive…. And just a great tasting fig in what might be the flavour profile that we’re most critical of.

Smith - another tried and true top fig. Once of the few that I keep multiple trees.

Cessac is outstanding and can stand next to smith any day.

A few others are family heirlooms. Maybe, one day they’ll be out there in greater numbers :)

A tried and true 5 star rating for sure ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I am sort of in the same boat as inflorescence, I work too many hours and was too tired to deal with all my trees resulting in poor yield.
The Mt. Etna's were very good though, DTE was good, WM#1 always good, Smith...
The best...probably Black Tuscan before the weather started cooling.

The Mt. Etna’s are hardy survivors they will grow and produce even with total neglect.
