I've noticed several people posting in different places (ie... Facebook, other forums) about a favorite fig they grew this season. Thought it would be a good topic for this year and following years. Tell us what your favorite fig was this season (2024). Pics and descriptions are welcomed, but not neccessary. I'll go first
Of the roughly 20 varieties I grow, my favorite fig variety for 2024 was Des Tres Esplets, hands down. My tree was rooted spring of 2024 and started setting figs in late May. I got 4 figs from the tree in total, starting mid August, and every one of them was outstanding. Non splitting, good form and color, and a straight forward flavor. The last fig, I harvested in weather that was cooling off, but was still as sweet as the first. I swear I tasted peanut butter/jelly.
Not sure if a fig can have a nutty flavor, but after I took the first bite, I stopped and looked down at the rest of the fig in my hand and decided right then and there, that DTE has found a permanent place in my collection. I can't imagine it getting any better but it's only it's first season. Can't wait for 2025.
Did you have a fig that made a good first impression or that is a tried and true favorite of you and/or your family, year after year?
