Crazy prices out there on cuttings, got to see this.

That's one way to look at it. Another way is that it's incredibly stupid to pay $200 for a cutting of Peter's Honey from one known seller when the exact same variety sells for $5 per cutting and $20 for a rooted cutting from other well-known growers/sellers like, say, JoePAFig.
Thats crazy, im watched alit of lousy videos and im sure he's a great gut but I dont know what makes his stuff sell for soo much? Thats not the first o e I've seen of his go for big money this year.

It is crazy. It seems that many people these days are fascinated by YouTubers and are willing to believe every word they say and buy anything they sell. I came across several individuals who were saying complete nonsense, totally unscientific broscience garbage, and when I asked for the source of information, they pointed me to YouTube channels  . YouTubers are modern-day prophets for indiscriminating audiences.

Lol I did find it kind of odd for some growers to start selling different strains of known varieties….people bought it so I guess there’s demand but it just seems unnecessary to add a new strain every time you have a tree that is productive.

Well I guess you can’t fault someone for asking a large amount for a variety they have cultivated for many years. I think it’s if you want to share and give back and spread what you’ve learned, in my opinion I feel better helping people and making it affordable.
In life I’ve had to pay for things that have cost me a fair amount of money, but it’s the people who have helped me I remember and try and do the same if I financially can.

Amen! And it can be hard to convince people not to listen to them, even when they are crying over their cuttings that failed because of doing what they said. Some of the worst cuttings and plants I got were from a well-known youtuber and it pains me whenever I see people say they like paying more to them because they know they will get “quality”. Ouch! Okay… do what you like!

Fruit collecting requires $...Depends on who you are and what you want. It may be $5, or it may be $500. Fruit tree, scion and cutting sellers are a net benefit to the world. Nothing and no one is perfect. There will always be trees that sell for more than they are worth. That's the price of participating sometimes. The exchange of fruit trees is a net benefit and this should always be remembered. Capitalism, though it has its faults is the best form of currency interaction. Sure, trading is great, but it's impossible to trade for everything you want. You need $, gold, or something someone else wants to participate.

So people can complain about $200 cuttings...and they are right.
People can be happy about $200 cuttings...and they are right.
There is no one perfect system, and there are an infinite amount of opinions.....

In the end, it's just fruit and it's just money. Fruit and money both come and go.

At least someone isn't spending $200 on drugs....it's $200 to grow some awesome fruit trees to feed themselves and their family tasty high quality nutrition.

My family jokes about how obsessed I am with figs, and I always reply, “At least it’s a healthy obsession. At least it’s not drugs!”

Growing fruit - figs, fresh strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, persimmons, donut peaches, etc. - I love all of it! 🥰

My neighbor, first told me she doesn't like figs. Then, asked me why I like them. She then said exactly this "At least it is a not drugs!"

I had the same terrible experience buying from a well known youtuber. Skewer size cuttings, which I thought was a graft pack, sent by mistake. Nope, I was told I didn't read the fine prints - he never said he would send something of standard size (6", 3 nodes, pencil size). The only parts of the cuttings that were pencil size were 1.5"-2" long.

Ugh, what a pain! Sorry that happened to you. Youtube does not equal good in all cases, that is for sure. I think people feel in a way like they know the person by watching their videos, but videos usually only show the good side, not the less good one.

To be honest, at least these are supposed to taste good! The other day I was mostly confused to see Set Cotnes MP (the one that on the MP website he describes as bland flavor, barely sweet, and only good for pig & cattle fodder) going for something like $140 for a cutting 😅

But hey, as they say something's worth what someone is willing to pay and if someone is into the 'collection' aspect and really wants it then who am I to judge, good for them. I agree it's not the seller's fault if people feel like bidding them up. IIRC the seller even linked to the MP website so they certainly weren't even hiding what MP's opinion of Set Cotnes was from buyers!

I see your point about MP's description on that variety but Id like to point out that his description of Pota de Cavall isnt of the greatest regard and for me Pota de Cavall is an excellent tasting and texture fruit. But our climates are very very different. I'd take a chance on growing any of Pons varieties even if the published remarks arent the greatest with observing them in Mallorca

I mean I would grow it if given freely, but almost zero chance I’d spend money on pig feed lol(I don’t have pigs)

I think people bogarting varieties bothers me more than price. id rather them sell high and the market set for what it is with supply and demand over bogarting the variety and never selling it. Ive had conversations with some people in the fig world trying to acquire really rare varieties, you would think you were trying to buy their first born.

That is true! And hey, it'd be awesome if it turns out to actually be great in other climates. I kinda hope that ends up being the case since the 'pig food' backstory would be funny if it ends up being great in other growing conditions. I'm not personally willing to spend that amount of money to try it out but hey, that's the great thing about figbid - all I have to do is not bid and let somebody else be the guinea pig!
