What’s on everyone’s wish list and why?

As cutting season approaches and everyone starts making wish lists, I’m curious what special fig everyone is chasing, whether it’s a unicorn or well established favorite for others.
What 3 figs are on your wish list and why?

I am going to mainly look for named Capri I don't already have. Or new neat wild ones that are sometimes posted. I may or may not try again with Jolly Tiger. I have had very bad luck with that one. What is on your wish list?

I have more pots than I can handle at the moment, but I am looking for borda barraquer. I really love rooting when there’s no other fig activity in the winter so if I can find this one I’ll go for it. :)

Borda barraquer looks like a good one. Yeah I love watching them grow over winter as well. I still get excited everytime I see a cutting push out a root.

Ugh, I miss the days of being able to have a wishlist. Mine is a cull list now. Instead of chasing the latest and greatest, I’m focusing more on what actually ripens well despite the types of weather fluctuations here.

But if I had to name some that are missing, I feel like I don’t have a good bordeaux variety yet. I’m still on the lookout for a good honey fig that doesn’t taste like melon or sunburn & ripen too soon.

Craven's Craving and Tia Penya... I'm hoping I can score a few nodes from a friend a bit west of me

;)

DSJG and Angelito are currently on my wishlist.

Currently rooting are Calderona, NDB, and Ondata. I have a DSJG cutting rooting, too; I got it at a very attractive price on Figbid. But it turned out to be greener than I thought and soon began to deteriorate/rot, so it likely won't make it.

Why these? I want to grow the highest quality figs I can grow here and I've heard great things about these varieties. I also like large figs, and these seem to be on the larger side. The goal is to eventually end up with about a dozen of very productive, tastiest fig varieties that ripen well up here in Southern Ontario. With a headstart, of course.

I am also on the 'need to cull' train, and I reduced my herd by about half this season, getting rid of duplicates and the varieties that didn't tickle my tastebuds. But that won't stop me from trialing a handful of new trees each year and potentially raising the overall quality bar of my collection.

I'm on the same boat with culling mostly synonyms. What are you culling ?

Castagnat REDACTED would be the only addition.

I do agree with @"Inflorescence"#181   I have been culling a lot.
I went from 170 varieties to probably 100 now.
So in light of that....there are just a few that I've tried to get in the past but missed a chance.
Maybe....who knows. lol

I’m in the same boat. I went from about 400 trees down to 80, out of 150+ varieties.

@"JMF75"#5

I am culling these, and probably a lot more.

Like many other members, I am trying to raise the quality level of figs in my collection.  With that, Irene’s Black Greek, Angelito, and Ondata remain on my wish list.

I seriously need to cull the number of varieties in my collection to get down to a more manageable size of 35-40 varieties.  I have many quality varieties that either don’t ripen in time or split like crazy when NJ weather cools.  Highly regarded varieties are not going to make the Final Cut if I can’t harvest ripe figs from them.

Have you ever grown Barada?

I've never tasted it, but it's a small desert loving honey fig.

I don’t have my eye on anything at the moment.

I’d consider adding another tree if I can identify one that is tasty and productive that produces between AJH and Preto.

I got it like a year or so ago and never up potted it. That’s another sign I have to get rid of a bunch, that I no longer want to up pot things, lol.

I just really want one that doesn’t taste like melon, or get all weird and fermenty on me.

The main fig that is on my wishlist is Angelito. It is really for one reason; my daughter. My daughter absolutely loves figs and watermelon. I heard Angelito has a watermelon flavor, so I must have it 😄

I bet you’ll end up with it by this winter with cutting season. :)

I forgot! Capoll Curt Negra is on my wishlist. I purchased one several years ago but it’s not true to type, so I need to get another one from a confirmed source.

:) Definitely! I can't wait to see her expression when she tries the first one 💜
