What is Your Favorite Hot Pepper?

Ooooo! Good thread!

Ok. I’m not into super hots. I like the spice but at a certain point, it just becomes ridiculous.

My personal favourite and “staple” hot pepper is one that I got from an older gentleman from Puglia…. Hence my name for it…Vecchio di Puglia :) it’s very fruity and guessing I would put the heat at 5 to 8000 SHU. I typically salt and press the water from these before packing them in olive oil. It’s also one of my most productive Pepper plants.

I also got one a while back from Marco that’s at the upper limit of my tolerance at around 50k SHU. That’s the Acrata… AKA in Italy as “Viagra Naturale” compact and spicy. Goes from green to jet black before it turns red. I think they’re awesome during their black stage. The plant grows huge and is very tree like. The leaves are not like any other pepper I’ve grown. They have a fuzzy softness to them more like tomato leaves. This one is available out there and if you can get your hands on it, I would definitely recommend it. Sometimes I’ll add one to a jar of the above noted peppers if they aren’t putting out quite as much heat as I’d like.

That’s one beautiful long pepper.

That pepper rates 5 stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Hey Everyone,

Since there is a good thread circulating about sweet peppers, I was wondering if we could get one going about your favorite hot peppers as well! I've been growing them for quite some time and have found some great ones, and it seems like I've only scratched the surface. What are your favorites?

There is a jalapeño called jalafuego. It’s a hotter version. It’s really good.

Jalapeños are my favorite and grow 5+ plants a year. Anything hotter I don’t enjoy eating fresh. I’m also growing ghost peppers this year, primarily to make powder for recipes and pest deterrence.

I always have to have a few Jalapeño plants …. I pickle them but my wife fills them with my pancetta and cheese calls them fusion poppers!

Oh yea almost forgot about those. My favorite ones are the appetizer called jalapeño poppers stuffed with cream cheese. They used to be very popular once but seems like now they lost their popularity. Still a hit at our house. I buy them at the grocery store in the freezer section. The TGIF brand is best.

This is what the TGIF brand looks like, I bake the in the toaster oven.IMG_2257.jpeg

If you have enough space... grow a bunch of super-hots. Reapers don't produce a lot but habanero or scotch bonnets etc. Shredded and sprinkled around plants will keep a lot of small critters off your plants. Good for squirrels, chipmunks.... anything that likes to dig. I would think they'd help with rats and voles.

I wish I could grow peppers, I kill almost every veggie I grow 😩 but I do love Serranos

Serrano is a good pepper. Shame you have problems with them. What happens to yours?
They grow tall and flower but drop or they just never flower. I've given up on growing anything in pots except potatoes at this point. This year I'll try excavating an area for a garden bed and see if I have better results

Don't quit. We have the same problem in Italy when it gets too hot. They can't handle the direct sun. I'd be willing to bet it you put up a shade cloth it will solve all your pepper problems. The heat messes with pollination

Do you vermicompost?

I think all plants like worm castings, but peppers seem to love'm more than anything I've ever grown. I grew in pots in inland San Diego for years, but we never really got super hot. Shade cloth is a great idea. I picked up Serrano Tampiqueno at ChilePlants.com years ago randomly. Grew it (in a pot.) and when they were all ripening, I was like Dang, aren't Serranos picked green? Ehh, whatever I'll harvest the seeds later and then a couples days later some were dark red and very plump, so I grabbed one and bit into it, wow! Sweetest pepper, great flavor, then just the right amount of heat that I can handle, then they added a smokey flavor to sandwiches. It's my favorite pepper.

I think a squatty 10 G pot, tended well, with a good percentage of home made vermicompost, would give you an overabundance of peppers for you. You gotta buy a 6 pack from chile plants to get live plants, put your favorite one in the 10G or multiple and enjoy!
