Welcome... everyone!

I’m not necessarily looking for an exact copy but I would like to have the black Madeira seedling grow into capri fig for pollen. I would like to do this with several varieties to have male capri fig of those varieties. Then try to breed those with some female figs. Do you know how rare of an occurrence this might be? Like is it 1 in 100, 1 in a billion…?
Well, now you are talking about a real rabbit hole. You mean use pollen from a caprifig, grow out the seedlings to select another caprifig to use the pollen from that?

Maybe I'm not following you.

If that is what you meant, I believe it's 25%, but the real answer is it's complicated by 1) gender and 2) persistence.

I suggest you ask @GoodFriendMike and @tinkerbug, and perhaps explain your question again, exactly what you want to do and how you think you could do it. It's an area with a lot interest right now.

I believe Tinkerbug sells seeds and grows out some crosses he makes himself. If he stills sells the seed packets, I would start there, you'll likely get a good unique male.

Yes, I would like to try doing that. I understand I would need a bunch of seeds planted to get a persistent capri. If I used something like a black maderia and the seeds grow then the persistent capri should have half of its genetics from the black maderia and the other half from the capri fig that would be used. At least that’s what it seems like. Then I can use that pollen from the new capri fig to try and pollinate another fig to try and get a new variety with traits that I’m looking for.

For instance, I hear black maderia doesn’t grow good in my area due to humidity. Maybe I can get something similar to a black maderia that does do good in my area. Also, supposedly the black maderia doesn’t grow fast or root fast. Maybe I can get something similar to grow faster and root faster. I know it would take a long time just to test and odds are I won’t be able to create something good but I figure it would be fun to run some tests and see. I definitely have a lot to learn and I don’t know much about figs but I’m trying to learn. I have 2 acres so I have plenty of space to plant some figs. 🙂
