Welcome Welcome @aerofigs15
Thank you! I'm fairly new and very eager to learn, caught the bug last year, started with good old Brown Turkey and Chicago Hardy and have been growing my collection since.Hello! it’s so nice to have you come and join us. Are you new to figs or been growing them for some time? Either way you are most welcome.️

Well, now you are talking about a real rabbit hole. You mean use pollen from a caprifig, grow out the seedlings to select another caprifig to use the pollen from that?I’m not necessarily looking for an exact copy but I would like to have the black Madeira seedling grow into capri fig for pollen. I would like to do this with several varieties to have male capri fig of those varieties. Then try to breed those with some female figs. Do you know how rare of an occurrence this might be? Like is it 1 in 100, 1 in a billion…?
Yes, I would like to try doing that. I understand I would need a bunch of seeds planted to get a persistent capri. If I used something like a black maderia and the seeds grow then the persistent capri should have half of its genetics from the black maderia and the other half from the capri fig that would be used. At least that’s what it seems like. Then I can use that pollen from the new capri fig to try and pollinate another fig to try and get a new variety with traits that I’m looking for.Well, now you are talking about a real rabbit hole. Maybe I'm not following you.
If that is what you meant, I believe it's 25%, but the real answer is it's complicated by 1) gender and 2) persistence.

For instance, I hear black maderia doesn’t grow good in my area due to humidity. Maybe I can get something similar to a black maderia that does do good in my area. Also, supposedly the black maderia doesn’t grow fast or root fast. Maybe I can get something similar to grow faster and root faster. I know it would take a long time just to test and odds are I won’t be able to create something good but I figure it would be fun to run some tests and see. I definitely have a lot to learn and I don’t know much about figs but I’m trying to learn. I have 2 acres so I have plenty of space to plant some figs.![]()

Thank you for the welcome and knowledge about figs! I have about 60 varieties--a dozen in ground trees, lots of big pots, lots grafted. IF THERE ARE ANY SO CAL FOLKS ON THIS THREAD THAT WANT TO TRADE, LET ME KNOW. I LIVE IN THE SOUTH BAY OF LA.
