The hard 4x9 pots are great for air layering. The fig grove aka Oregon figs aka Chris Clairmount has a great yt video on how to do that.

I'll have to try that next summer. I like how he put a clear "window" in each tree pot.

The fig grove is very methodical on how he grows figs. If I was new to growing figs, I would mirror his method especially when up potting. All of his trial figs are in 7 ga nursery pots that are either up potted into 15 gal or put in ground if they are early and/or breba producers.

I first doubt whether the flimsy pots can stand on its own. It is as good as the thick pots. Both would fall in the wind or when the pots are dry. And like I said before, both would rip if you held them by the corner like I did, especially after watering.
I kept the pots tall because I don't want to raise the water table, especially when rooting cuttings.

Feedback on these Nuenen tree pots from Amazon - 150 tree pots for $34.
Gotta say, not bad at all! I fully expected slightly better than a plastic trash bag, but these were much better. Not the S&S quality, but for the price, I am very happy with my purchase.
Attached are some pics so you can see the drainage holes and the integrity of the pot.
Someone else mentioned that a different brand from Amazon tore when they lifted the pot by the corners, this one is definitely sturdy enough and I couldn’t tear it if I tried.
It is taller than I wanted, but I just folded down the lip, which was actually very easy to do. Others say they cut it, which would also be easy. I wasn’t able to find shorter options, but it really didn’t matter.
I took the most wrinkled one from the inside of the stack, and this is the one in my pic that is filled with soil, so as you can see, it’s totally fine.
When filled with soil, technically it could stand (pic) but the bottom is kinda rounded and soft, not firm, so it would easily topple over, but I fully expected that and will be keeping it in a plastic bin anyways for watering.

If you want to keep it more rectangular, temporarily insert it into a "real" 4x9 tree pot. The other option is to use yogurt containers to keep the pots upright.

Thanks, I’ll try that.
Right now it is in a plastic file folder bin, which surprisingly is exactly the right height, lol.
