Tree pots

If you don't need them in numbers, then Greenhouse megastore is good with higher unit prices but low minimum purchase. Stuewe & Sons have better prices and more selections but have to buy a case at a time of anything. 4 x 9 is the most common size, equivalent to a bit less than 2.39 litre, slightly less than a trade gallon pot (about 2.84 litre)

I have bought cases of 4x9 from S&S and also bought the thin stuff from Amazon (without knowing at the time). For up potting purpose, there isn't a lot of difference because I don't keep the trees in a tree pot forever. Both did the job before the next up pot and were reuseable. Amazon stuff do rip at the corner if you pick up a pot at the corner like I do. I also rip the thick tree pots at the same spot if one needs comparison. If I have to guess, the thin stuff probably would break down sooner than the thick pots. Thick pots also hold the shape much better, which means it looks better and won't bulge but isn't as easy to fit into different trays other than the companion trays.

If you only need to up pot a few plants, you can use recycled soda bottles, 1 or 2 litres. None of my plants complained about the reused bottles.

I used them as well this last year. They are definitely very flimsy. I grouped them all together and placed them inside of a few milk crates. Mine couldn’t stand on their own. I’m not sure I would do it again, but they work in a pinch.
Hmmm...there must be some variation in the cheap ones. Mine are plenty strong enough to stand on their own, but the tall tapered shape makes a milk crate necessary.

Thanks, I didn’t realize that Stuewe & Sons had a minimum order. Guess I’ll have to check out the greenhouse megastore. Wish they had a free shipping promo if you sign up for texts or something.

I use 3 x 8 size from Stuewe for rooting fig cuttings. I buy to large cases annually. I have had a few people asking my for just a few, so I am going to start offering them individually.

Oh, I don't mean min order in dollar but you have to buy a case at a time e.g. 80 is the min. for MT49. Most newbies don't need 80. The shipping charge is actually more than the item in this case unless you buy more. The next size is 138.

I think Greenhouse Megastore run specials from time to time, not sure if they have unrestricted free shipping specials.

Shoot, that is a lot of pots, just in case I don't end up needing that many. 😕

If you go the stuewe and sons route which I’ve bought four cases in two years lol. The slits in the bottom are good the giant hole is bad, the top of the line is the corner holes though. For rooting the corner holes have helped a ton in drainage and aeration of the soil for me. These are TP49CH

For tree pot holders, indoors I use some cheap bins from Walmart. They come in ten packs and hold 6 each. This way I can water the trees and anything dripping out collects at the bottom and helps grow a bunch more roots under the tree pots. I also use some 3x5 trays from greenhouse megastores for outdoor watering, along with my home made tree pot holders made out of a trellis from menards

Thank you- the model numbers are super helpful.

I'll be the odd man out here and admit to using the thin Amazon pots. I use them for growing pawpaws and they have held up just fine. However, I give away the majority of my seedlings, so I'm not looking for a life-time quality pot.
I’ll add to this, I used the super thin ones from Amazon. Boy are they thin, but they haven’t broken, and one I get the soil in they seem to generally hold together fine.

Would you mind please sending a link to the ones that you bought?

I’ll use the thin tree pots. The just don’t stand up well in my experience and they deform pretty easily. If you only plan on using them a relatively short time and have something to put them in to stand them up you should be fine.

Same for me. They are cheap as heck. Gotta save money somewhere.
