The $1000 fig tree

Definitely agree. I got about 70% success on the 55 grafts that I put on the tree. The failures were mostly chip graft and a few cleft grafts. Most of the whip/tongues took. Since then, I've converted some small Desert Kings into new plants with great success. I welcome the nervewracking challenge

I will add Green Goblin to the mix. Might as well take advantage of all this wonderful Talent that our senior members possess... 😂🤣 I believe my Green Goblin cuttings were kind enough to take, and ready for up potting.

By the grace of the Fig Gods yes.

Ahem cough cough cough... Whip and tongue grafts please... ???

I only have two Green Goblin I would suggest to the group to let me grow these two fig trees as whips to produce the most cuttings for this project. But I hereby relinquish control over these Green Goblin trees so whatever is decided is just fine by me. My $200 pledge stands as well. You guys decide what we will do with it. I will formally relinquish control of that as well. I'm excited guys let me know what you're going to decide to do.

I have plans to graft a number of figs this winter. Jolly rancher, green goblin, cessac and possibly a couple others. I may just root the 50 jolly rancher cuttings along with about 100 black Celeste cuttings 😂. Let me practice another year before spending loads unless someone in the group has a Sicilian 33 in possession already so we aren’t out money lol

I have two green goblins from different sources and they are both really slow to grow this year.

I just cut three air layers from one of my trees that are rooting out at the moment.

Hold on... you need a whole node? I'm grafting 1/8th nodes these days!

*I just started grafting this spring. I think I'm 50/50 at the moment...
if you think that’s bad, you should see how poorly I’m doing with rooting green cuttings this summer.

Just pick some that are firming up. I have rooted totally green cuttings a few times successfully. Credit to the cuttings though. I didn't need to do much, they just root themselves. Remember to reduce the concentration of rooting hormone, if you use it.

Or start watching a few youtube videos on grafting. All it takes is a sharp knife and something to wrap it up. I am practicing with box cutter and utility knife this season. Those are usually my backup knives if grafting knives fail. I figured I need to use the backup knives as often as the primary to feel at ease. Before I know, I have used the backup on 50-70 grafts this season with pretty good success. I also use the basic parafilm instead of the fancy buddy tape even though I have both. That way, I can realistically compare the difference. Buddy tape is better but also darn expensive.

@Team FigFanatics.com I have relinquished control of $200, and two rooted Green Goblin cuttings. From what I'm reading four of y'all want to try your hand at grafting @Figsee Sicilian 33. I am assuming the same Intrepid group of grafters would be interested in grafting the Green Goblin trees as well? @Bofig @grasshopper @figologist @Fig Gazer are there any other members who wish to throw their grafting knife into the ring? It seems there are two thoughts that occur to me. One to go with the tried, and true Fig Gazer , or perhaps to promote members Grafting abilities, another one of our members who is itching to take this project on. I notice @MattK has popped into this thread as well. Also we do have the world famous member @GIV who is also an accomplished grafter. Out of San Diego. Who really feels confident in grafting the Sicilian 33, and who might be more confident in trying out the Green Goblin, even though it is less prestigious variety. I will humbly suggest that this group probably shouldn't encompass all 400 members as some members will die of old age before they get their cuttings. Maybe we should get together on the size of this group, and who really feels like a rockstar grafter LOL I know I do not. I think a case could be made for having somebody take on a grafting project that might be just a little bit over their head to promote learning at figfanatic, but striking out with a sicilian 33 might feel a little emotional. LOL I know it would for me. Maybe we should organize this a bit, and really see who truly wants to take it on. Passing on the services of @Fig Gazer for the entire project is perhaps a bit over optimistic. But whatever you guys decide.
