Schar Israel - good and unique šŸ‘

In a way, it's a good thing that I didn't know anything about figs when I selected my cuttings last spring from the cutting program, because I selected some that I would not have selected if I did it now. As a result I got some underrated and lesser known treasures like EBT, Mavra Sika, and Schar Israel. And maybe SoCal Sunset will turn out to be common. That is another lesser known variety that I got from the cutting program.

I got this one when going on my "lesser" known varieties hunt and there is another Schar fig (3 total iirc) I've been looking for - Schar Italy
I want to go on a lesser known varieties hunt, Lol. You know of any other really good ones? Or some that are extremely underrated?

Second time trying Schar Israel and not only is it good but quite unique!

It was soft, sweet and the jam was a little sticky but had a strong Plum flavor to it as well as having some tang, which again reminded me of a Plum (skin).

Definitely passed the cull test and going onto the Maturity Trial - so far I think it will pass that test too

I like it!
Wow, I didn’t know that the syconium could be red, too! That velvet plum skin is very beautiful.

Cool how their legacy lives on with so many figs still bearing the name. Do you know if the Schar Israel are directly connected as the same plant or a synonym?
I don't know. There is not much information about this fig. Fig Database lists Belleclare #96 as a possible synonym, and IIRC I saw Belleclare #96 mentioned with Schar Israel somewhere else. It may have been the other forum or figbid.

I seen it on the BellaClare list on the other forum. I’m not sure if it’s a synonym either.

Other forum! I’m confused šŸ¤”

I'm not a member over there. When I was getting started growing figs last spring, I tried to join over there and admin was not allowing new members at the time. I think they were following advice from Ross. Then I found this place. Got a warm welcome here. I know many people are members in both places and that is good. There is tons of great information and very knowledgeable people over there. I have been a member of other forums for years and it just seemed odd to me when I tried for 2 or 3 days to join and they wouldn't let me.

I will say figfanatics has way less arguments and is more chill. I spend more time chatting here.
