Pro Mix

I picked up this bag of promix this morning at Walmart. It’s 2cf compressed into 1cf. There was 2 different types, this red one I bought and a yellow one. Mine says potting mix the yellow said garden soil. I have a fig tree to up pot and I have some fig cuttings I’ll need to root. Is this promix the same as the promix ph in the big silver bag? Anybody ever use this promix?

A little worried Teresa the word moisture so prominently on the Pro mix bag makes me think of an artificial moisture retentive material being included. Also to be honest the extreme small size of pro-mix with perlite seems to preclude any usefulness with aeration. As always I recommend adding perlite #3 into the mix it's the Goldilocks size of perlite

I always add perlite to any potting mix I use because they always put so little in the mix. I’ve never used this promix before so I was just wondering about it.

I use this for my outdoor potted figs. It’s not the same as the silver ProMix that is great for cuttings. It has coco coir in it (10-20% by volume). I bought it because it was the cheapest (only 2.97 on clearance last February). I haven’t had any problems with it—using it as part of a 4-2-1 mix.

Took the kids to VA Safari today and passed by Staunton and thought of you. 😅 Funny how figs are always on my mind.

Oh and that Promix works just fine. Add perlite and you’re golden. I like to add some leaf compost , worm castings and a dash of lime too.

We almost went to that park once a couple of years ago when my grandchildren came but then we got bad weather so we stayed home. Some day we'll get there.

Why don't you like a wetting agent for rooting cutting?

I feel the wetting agent allows the soil to be more even and absorb water better.
I use promix bx 4 to 1 with coarse perlite to root cuttings. There is wetting agent in bx but no where near as much as they put in the Walmart moisture potting mix promix. I tried a bag of it on a few cuttings and the results weren't very good, a lot of rotted bottoms. Might be alright for up potting with a lot of coarse perlite. Have you used it to root cuttings ?

Is it just wetting agents or is it water retaining polymers? I passed on these on clearance on the fall when I was scouring the local Walmarts trying to find get the organic on clearance. Most peat based mixes will have a wetting agent to stop them from becoming hydrophobic. I have used other mixed in the past that are " moisture control " those use water retention polymers. I find that in my climate those mixes stay too wet.

I was going to return it but lost the receipt so I’ll just keep and use it.

I did use it with a perlite for a batch recently. I brought over half those fig pops to San Jose to give away to my family. Half of them had roots, it was mostly the panache and flanders who had a good amount of roots. Although this soil was really dry compared to what how I moist I think people are doing it. I can't get any water out of the soil when I press really hard, my hand is slightly moist and a bit of peat sticks to my hand. When I press a tissue paper against it, you can barely see any moisture. I also did pre-root in sand for 1.5 weeks. I was lazy to make the fig pops right away so I washed the cuttings and put it on top of moist sand. Maybe if it went directly in the red bag promix and it is too moist, it might rot.

The more recent batch of fig pops I did for myself, I had to cut the red bag promix with coco coir as I was running out of promix. I will probably only use cheap peat moving forward as the promix is getting expensive. The red bags where 13 dollars a few years ago at Walmart but I've run out. I think they are 22+ now.
