Its begun!

just watched this with echo'd the sun sugar rec for the same reasons.

Recommended
1) Bobcat (early red slicer), hybrid early determinant with a huge disease resistant
2) Rosella Purple (purple dwarf), indeterminate, open pollinated. Similar to much loved Cherokee purple but without some of its issues
3) Sun Sugar (orange cherry): combines vigor of Super Sweet 100/ cracking resistance with flavor of Sun Gold.
4) Celebrity Plus (Red Beefsteak): improved Celebrity Hybrid with tobacco mosaic virus resistance. Semi-determinate (not sure what this meaaaans)
5) Carmelo (Red slicer): hybrid indeterminate, very productive with reduced cracking.
6) Brandy Boy (Pink Beefsteak), hybrid of Brandywine with better disease resistance.

Runners up: Super Sweet 100 (Red cherry), Big Beef Plus (red slicer), Chef's Choice Yellow (Yellow Beefsteak, hybrid of Brandywine Yellow, fixes its disease resistance and bad production), and Dwarf Emerald Giant (green dwarf with a lot of disease resistance).

Personally my all star is Copia! It does great from me, never had any disease issues and its my fave, but of course my climate is less wet and less hot than Millennial Gardener
Does anyone know who Greg LeHouiller is? He named Cherokee Purple and lives fairly close to me. In 2020, he gave away tray fulls of young tomato plants and Im beating myself for not saving the seeds. I'll have to reach back out to him to get more seeds.

That’s so cool!!
He has a website with the seeds for sale:

Yes. We went to a Tomatopalooza event years ago and meet him. I have his Epic Tomatoes book.
We sampled many tomatoes at Tomatopalooza and I saved the seeds from them. That next year I bet I grew 100 different tomatoes. We pretty much settled on a handful that we liked though with Cherokee Purple always one of them.

Maybe I’m just spoiled on eating sun golds but the Cherokee varieties don’t have enough acidity for my liking.

Sun gold is about the only hybrid Craig recommends. They are good. A really good Cherokee Purple is a magical thing for me. Especially with salt, pepper, mayo on a sandwich!!! 😋

I’m new to tomatoes. I like a large tomato, as high a brix as possible, low acidity as possible, and not pithy (so no ox hearts).

Is there any that you recommend that fit the bill?

I bought ‘Pineapple’ tomato seeds.

Try Cherokee Purple and its variants. Black Krim is supposedly good but I never tasted any of what AI mentioned.
Not liking acidic tomatoes...get outta here.

I grew Super Sweet 100 and Celebrity Plus last season and will be growing them again this season. Although I dislike tomatoes, my family, friends and neighbors loved them. Both were very productive for me.

For some reason starting less than a year ago, I can’t eat anything that’s acidic anymore, but I refuse to give up tomatoes, so my compromise is to go with low acidic, tomatoes, lol.

Supposedly, Cherokee Purple and Black Krim are supposed to be acidic but I never tasted the tanginess from those 2 varieties. Oh well, with tomatoes, I just let them grow on their own.

Anything to be a pasting tomato should work for you. We have an old non-catalog heirloom in the family that would be perfect. Very little acid

You have a family heirloom tomato? That’s really special.

Millennial Gardener has that on his list for 2026.
I grew it about 4 years ago and thought it was pretty good. I like acidic tomatoes and black tomatoes. No point in growing bland tomatoes. I also enjoy fried green tomatoes for the acidity.

I have also grown SunGold, Sun Sugar, and Sun Orange. I personally thought Sun Gold still tasted the best for me. I think the crack resistance came at the expense of thicker skins on the Sun Sugar and Sun Orange.
