Hand pollination

I wonder if I was to get the wasp if they would over winter in my grow room if I put a couple of capris in there from the outside. It will for sure never even get close to freezing in there unless we have some weird power issues during the winter. Also read about folks overwintering the actual figs in a plastic container and they emerged in the spring to move to profichi.
Possible. But you would need different Capri.

Over the past couple years it has taken off. I love it and hoping some will get into breeding. Would love to do or see a very large scale project.
I’ve got about a thousand seedlings going indoors right now. May be 2-3 years but I hope to use some of the Adriatic seedlings as a capri in the future. I’ve got at least 200 green goblin seedlings lol

I don’t have that many going right now. As I don’t have the space yet. Your plans are for better Adriatic types?

I’d like to see some capris that stay a light green with red insides. Then the plan would be to cross with something like green michurinska to further the earlier Adriatics if it ever works out. The down side could be the colors are tied to ripening length and it’s not possible to create an early ripening Adriatic without the later ripening. Many questions to be answered in the next decade of fig breeding.

Glad your taking that route. Besides breeding Capri with Capri. I want to breed for a dark black persistent Capri. I think it would help people create better berry figs.

Great thread. This motivated me to update my article on the process I use. It is just the syringe and water method, but added some of the details that have helped me. https://tinkerbugfigs.com/hand-pollination/

It is really not that hard and I am sure my method could be improved, but it works well enough to ge a lot of fig seeds each year. I am still working on finding the best time for each variety to get the most seeds from each fig and on getting the pollen to mix well in the water.

I tried 3 methods this year: syringe, needle and thread, gum stimulator. Syringe was best for pollinating a large number of figs. Needle and thread simplest for a small number, although less efficient in the use of pollen (gum stimulator similar but no advantage over n&t). Seed counts were similar.

Sorry for the newbie pollinating question, but it’s cutting sale season, and I’m wondering which one to buy to pollinate my figs? Saleeb? A different one?
I’ve talked to Mike about it in my thread titled caprifig. For non wasp hand pollinating he suggested Capri Q for an edible capri if I remember correctly. Also said saleeb would be a good pick other than that just go for a cheap available caprifig

I tell most to get Capri Q as it has a good bit of pollen, normally easy to find, cheaper than Saleeb (most of the time) and it's main crop is quite tasty. But easy to find ones that are good, Saleeb, enderud and UCD. @Bofig might have some LSU DC 2 or 6 rooted already. That may be of interest as well. Harvey should have Capri Q. I seen Saleeb listed in one of the giveaway threads. FigBid does not have anything right now. But that could change any minute. If looking for something different for breeding I could list many. Some are listed here ---> https://figfanatic.com/threads/persistent-capri-list.2385/

Thanks.

Okay, dumb question: does it matter which varieties that you pull it with which one, or not?

Or is it just a matter of getting as much pollen as possible?

If you are asking if the different pollens affect figs differently, I was told by Mike they do but you won’t notice the difference most likely. Unless you are wanting to breed figs then that would obviously matter. Also if that question is dumb then I’m dumb too because I asked it myself lol.
