Hand pollination

Are there any videos or articles with images that explain in detail how to use thread and needles?
I have not seen any videos on it. Nor have I seen step by step text with photo's. Something that I would think would exist by now. Maybe it does. But I do not get on Youtube or the other video sites often. I may have to look.

While I haven’t successfully pollinated yet, I plan to use Joe’s instructions. He has a 90% success rate, and his directions are clear. He’s been kind enough to let me taste his pollinated figs several times.

I would just like to add a little here with Joe's video, just one Caprifig can have 400,000-700,000 pollen grains, the average amount of pollen grains a wasp can carry is about 3,000, and only 5-10 grains is needed to set a seed. It seems very little pollen is needed for 1 fig. Another point, his pollen 'grains' are clumps of pollen from the male flowers, these would certainly do better if they were crushed, leaving just dust that would better serve the purpose. These pollen 'grains' will float in the air, and certainly work better.

I did notice that adding to water, shaking then letting the pollen saturate and shaking again separates all the pollen grains for a cloudy look rather than clumpy. If this number is true my 4 ounces of water had around 4 million pollen grains divided by about 10 syringes at 12 MLs each roughly If I had to guess. Probably pollinated 50 figs per syringe and this should spread the pollen quite evenly and thoroughly to each flower was my theory. If these numbers were averaged more or less that’s 8,000 pollen grains per fig if done perfectly.

I want to try it again but using a different method.
Not sure what gauge my needle is...it's a larger one though.
Amy works at a medical supply distribution warehouse...I can get any size that's best.
The water method yielded about 50% success, but that is probably operator error.
I will try again.....at some point.
Are you talking knee fluid removal needle big? Meat-infuser big? Basketball pump needle big?

Funny you mention knee fluid removal, I have had a couple knee surgeries.
So yea about that thick. lol
As for timing, I watched a few videos to make sure I was doing it right.
The ones that turned out were very good.

Did you get clarification on timing?
For me the best timing was 3-6 weeks after the fig formed. I’ve heard dime to nickel size is best but I honestly had almost every fig I put the solution into ripen with viable seeds. I went to the farm supply store and bought animal vaccination needles I believe were 18-20 gauge. Smaller is better to fit in the holes easier. The syringe came with 16 gauge but I got a pack of thinner needs.

We did IVF a while back and they send you no shortage of syringes so I have stock in them. Hopefully some of these caps I got make a couple of profichi next year or it may be 27 before I get to pollinate.
What Capri are you growing? Are you planning to do any breeding? If so with what female figs?

I have Capri Q, St Anthony, DC6, Wild #1, Saleeb right now. I need to get a DC2, Girsh, and maybe the UCD. I want to have pollinated figs to eat and speed up ripening times. Maybe try to breed some for experimentation and try to create some sort of super cold hardy fig that doesn’t die back to the ground every year here. Years from getting even testing out new stuff, but I like to tinker around with things and experiment! Will probably end up with a bunch of non-edible caprifigs and Smyrnas but hey, it will be a fun experience at least🤣

Nice collection! I am not certain Girsh Park is persistent yet. But it is a good Capri. Especially for those looking to try and get wasp.

I wonder if I was to get the wasp if they would over winter in my grow room if I put a couple of capris in there from the outside. It will for sure never even get close to freezing in there unless we have some weird power issues during the winter. Also read about folks overwintering the actual figs in a plastic container and they emerged in the spring to move to profichi.

Many have tried. Blastophaga apparently plays hard to get

Dc2? Should’ve asked I have several in tree pots lol

It's so cool that so many growers are getting into hand pollenating lately. It opens the door to so many new possibilities...

I'm so excited that I'm hoping someone will mail me an envelope containing an unlabelled baggie full of some unknown powdery substance... What could possibly go wrong!?!? :ROFLMAO:
Over the past couple years it has taken off. I love it and hoping some will get into breeding. Would love to do or see a very large scale project.
