Hairy Bark - what is it and why?

@Inflorescence good luck with those Southern California fires. I'm up here in Berkeley so they're not affecting me, but one cousin lost her roof to the winds in Sunland. She is also threatened with the fire not too far away. Another cousin amazingly threatened in Pasadena by fire. She had to evacuate.

Here is my Dolça, I don’t feel this is a good example for you because my tree is smaller and it was really beaten up by the weather this last year. It had die back from cold last winter, lost all its leaves from lack of water a couple times this summer, and is on the wind side. So… it looks like a weather exposed fig tree. 🙂

Looks like stress cracks to me. My trees get them as well.

Yeah, for sure. It comes from cold and then warmth too close together. That and dryness. Your trees compared to mine are like opposites in the pictures because you can really see the effect of moisture on yours from humidity and the effect of dryness on mine. Mine look like they need some lotion. 😂

I have a few like yours as well. What lotion do you recommend? Hemp based? Coconut? Or other? :)

I agree. Looks like slugs or snails are having a field day.
I lost a couple of big trees that way.
Here I have to keep pots cleared of debris and check all dark spots for them.
Sluggo helps a good bit.
You know, I don’t have snails or slugs where I’m at to know what kind of damage they might do to a fig tree. But it would be interesting if it was like a nightly dose of snail slime (mucin) causing the weirdo lenticels on Kid Fig’s tree.

I have snails and slugs all over... they get into the pots but I don't think i've ever seen one in a tree. The slugs are kinda gross though

Wow! This is REALLY getting out of control...
So sorry for those impacted...

I need to look more into this, not sure if this is a zebra. 😃

DYPLOLABIA AFZELII — a type of lichen.

I think it’s a zebra, but still interesting. It’s a type of lichen that thrives in tropical climates and is in the south, like Florida & Georgia. Wonder if it could be something related with the other bark stuff going on?
If it's lichen, it would be harmless (and a sign of "healthy air", so I've read).
Maybe you can spray "an investigative patch" with hydrogen peroxide a few times;
If it'd be lichen, it would disappear (as in die off).
