First Roots... Class of 2026

@Fig Gazer
Just wanted to thank you again for the 505H from your fundraiser- it is making such gorgeous roots!
(fig popped on 1/05)

I think it might have been you who said 505H makes a very high % of mule figs. I wonder if varieties that make multiples tend to have such strong root growth?

505-H has up to 80% mule figs in it's old age .NICE ROOTS ! i dought if there is a conection ? personaly i do not get to see roots till they come out the bottom of 4" x4" x 9+ " tree pots or 1 gallon nursery pots , no longer use fig pops as the fragile roots easily break off when up potting . Because i send cuttings the day or so from when there cut ,and they have lots of sap and no exposure to sub 30 degre temps they grow fast and powerfully .

I'm really hoping to try 505H this season.

Thanks guys, im not super experienced with seperating suckers below soil line and i do love my i258 and its starting to set fruit so i dont want to mess with the rootball too much, but maybe ill airlayer it, it deff had a root system from just moving the top soil around i could see direct roots attached to the sucker.
I have a cutting of green goblin going also so this was nore insurance i may just leave the gg on for giggles.
1 more question will the gg graft be able to hold fruit? Or do i need to support it up somehow?
Technically all grafts should be supported for first year.
Don’t be afraid to kill things by hacking away, replacements are just a Figbid away.

Wow, up to 80% some day must be amazing.

Plus I’m guessing from the way this cutting is growing, that your mother tree must be very strong and robust and in ground for many years?

Not complaining as I’m happy for any roots, but two days after I won an Airlayer of the same variety this popped out the tiniest grass seed looking root. Guess I’ll have one to give to someone now.

I have some cuttings on 4x9 tree pots
Some of you weigh the pots and them add water say to 500g
My question is as the cuttings grow and leafy out, would you increase the amount of water as they grow
Or keep the weight the same as when you first started

You can hydrate to the same level of moisture. But you’ll notice that the leafed out ones suck up the water fast. So you’ll have to water more frequently.

Mine aren’t as pretty as some of those gorgeous root pics with the spaghetti look with the roots but many are coming along. Had some rot unfortunately. The two on the left arrived today from Harvey’s sale. More on the way…decided to do fig pops with those two (Calderons). The others that I already up potted are cuttings from my own trees (JH Adriatic and two Strawberry Verte). Others are starting to leaf out and have small roots. Some I’m still waiting on roots)1770349620577.jpeg
