First Roots... Class of 2026

With the 4x9 pots, do you plan to bag them as well? if so, how would you secure the bag around the cutting with out moving the firmly placed cutting. A twist and tie. Honest question since am looking to change from Fig pop to the 4x9 tree pots. thanks
I use elastic bands, if you get produce bags they come up over the top of the 4×9 pot, you can fold the bag over the top and put elastic around the top of pot or you. An get bigger elastics and put it around the plastic and cutting then twist it and bring it down under the pot, same thing I do with the elastic when im doing figpops.

Yep with stolen clear meat and produce bags from the grocery store😄. I’ve secured the bags with rubber bands just enough that I can open the bags to add water and fertilizer.
I’d re-watched the Notorious Fig’s comprehensive propagation video and thoroughly read @Inflorescence article(s) about fig propagation. I did a trial run in October on a VDB cutting that I had gotten this past spring. No clonex cuz I ran out. At first I had a heat mat but quit it using because my grow room’s ambient temp was in the mid 70s. I didn’t use a bin because from trial and error the heat can get 80° even if it’s set at 78°. I fertilized every other week (I’m always concerned about rot) with a very diluted kelp and seaweed and water mix.
2 days ago I was curious if there was anything happening and carefully removed the soil from the pot. To my surprise the bud bread happened slightly below the soil line and there was a single root growing. Hopefully, I didn’t kill the cutting’s progress and I’ll see in a couple of weeks if the bud becomes a leaf.
With the 4x9 tree pot method, I just have to be more patient and if I’m lucky, I wont have to worry about the up potting.
Love the stolen produce bags!! Hey when your broke because you spent all your money on fig cuttings you gotta do what you gotta do!! 😂

8/30 of my fig pops put together on in mid december have roots so far.

In order of rooting:
Cavaliere- slighlty ahead of the others, has had roots for a bit
Cherry Cordial - both rooted out right after cavaliere and have leafed out already
Cherry pie- also rooted right after cherry cordial

Now today, we got 4 new guys with roots peakin out (been checking every day so they just poked out today)🎉
Capri-Q
Emalyn's Purple
San Biagio
Angelito

The rest continue to wait. many many have buds swelling but i dont see any roots yet. we wait and see... None of the ones done 1/4 or 1/6 have anything to be expected...

Are you using a heat mat? I haven't started mine yet, so trying to learn from other people's successes.

Yes. 3 of my 6 (was originally 2 cuttings but I split then up) have roots. My cavaliere rooted out first but its been dwarfed by cherry cordial and cherry pie.

Bourjasette grise and ondata have also each rooted out. No one else new yet.

I prerooted cuttings in my early years in either coir or sphagnum peat moss. As a result, I have to move each one with roots and plant them in media. I get lazy nowadays and just stick them in a pot or bag. :ROFLMAO:

I have also removed the soil to check for roots and cuttings conditions when unexpected things happened. Light medium is key to avoid a quick crumble, which may tear the roots unexpectedly. But I don't usually do it for up pot. I guess I am too lazy to do this. I also don't wait till it is root bounded, which may put the plant in stagnant mode.

I would still give the advice about being careful with the delicate roots as I can't tell how handy/clumsy people are with their hands. It only takes a second of inattention to lose a bunch of roots & kill the cutting. Been there, done that.

In my experience, cuttings would root above 60F. Setting the temperature higher just make it root a bit quicker.
I am so glad to see somebody rooting cuttings under 70*F. My growing area is about 71. Many cuttings are leafing out and with the sun moving position, they are getting a very small amount of morning sun. Many people are using heat mats and I am not. I am not seeing roots yet and check periodically.

B.grise is a weird one for me idk if its just not a great specimen but it hasnt done much. Thats how my cavaliere was it grew great then got blown by, by others.
My ondata doesnt even have roots but was a fairly pithy small cutting i got from a friend for free so im not too sad on it even tho i want ondata 🤣. A few stand outs for time and vigor for me were, forestera, san biagio, santa clause lane.
Best of luck i hope they all take off for you

I don’t have a heat mat. A couple of my cuttings are showing roots/leafing out, but most are just chilling. Glad it’s not only my cuttings being slow lol.

Trust me most of mine are very slow. All of my ones from October 31st which were all on a heatmat until like last week have roots, but only 5/8 of them have a tiny leaf. The rest have swollen buds though.
