First Roots... Class of 2026

Nice fat juicy roots starting on NSDC, fig popped on 12/27.

I was actually worried that this might rot on top, since the stems were still on it and very thick and green, but authentic parafilm has the perfect breathability quotient, and they were totally fine!

I wonder if it took a little longer since NSDC is a later season variety (something I seem to be noticing)?

Congratulations—those roots look strong and healthy. I’ve honestly never had results like this, as my rooting success has been pretty limited. Seeing progress like yours definitely motivates me to give rooting another try.

If you don’t mind sharing, I’d love to know a bit about your process: what medium or mix are you using, did you apply a rooting hormone (and if so, which one), and are you using heat mats? If yes, what temperature are you running them at? TIA.

Thank you, that’s nice of you to say. ☺️

Of course, I’m happy to help!

In response to your questions,

- Promix HP or yellow bag, whichever is cheaper at the time. Sometimes I will throw in a handful of perlite, if I remember.

- After a lot of research, even though I had powdered rooting hormone already, I saw so many posts that said their powdered rooting hormone contributed to rot, so I bought the recommended Clonex gel, which I think works fabulously. And a little goes a long way.

- Yes, I use a heat mat in the beginning, set at 77 degrees. And a thermostat controller with a probe, because otherwise, i was shocked to learn that some mats can sometimes cycle up to 100 degrees unbeknownst to us.

- And I use the authentic parafilm, Parafilm M, not any of the knockoffs that call themselves Parafilm but are not, because of its perfect breathability / permeability. (see pic)

And feel free to dm with any questions. ☺️

Thank you for sharing—this is extremely helpful and very much appreciated. I truly value the detailed breakdown of your process and will definitely be applying several of these tips.

what do you MEAN slower. mine done on 12/19 so far 14/30 have any signs of roots.

None of mine on 1/4 or 1/9 do. I even turned up the heat to 70 upstairs!!! (and yes, theyre on a heat mat too)

What’s your setup?
promix bx with added perlite, heat mat to 79, in fig pops. I used clonex for the set on 1/4 and 1/9 and hormex powder on the set on 12/19.

Theyre in a rubbermaid tote with lights attached to it. the ones on 1/4 and 1/9 dont have the lights on since none have roots, the 12/19 one has lights on 4 hours a day going up to 8 this week (so as to not burn the leaves by sudden increased light amount)

Yay for everyone's new roots!... I have fig pops with great roots on clbc barbillone beltrana and Iranian candy and some others.... I'm losing track and have figs in the dining room. Figs in the hall. Figs in my office. Its out of control.

I have to make sure I actually store some cuttings next year and start them

Just remember the golden rule of collecting figs… There’s always room for one more! 😆
