Fig Variety Database

Not sure if possible or if @TorontoJoe and the moderators are interested in doing so, but any thought on creating a fig variety database as a subthread?

Although it’s late in the season, maybe standards can be made in preparation for next season.

I don't see the point in making one.  There is one on another forum and it's virtually useless as nobody posts any information on it.  Everybody just posts their photos and descriptions in the main forum.  If I need a picture, I just go to Fig Database or do a Google search.

I agree that one is useless.

However, one created from scratch with standards, although difficult, can be a valuable resource.

I believe this may be in the works. But will take members here to make it work. I will try to add what I can when I can on the Caprifig side of things. But as you said. It is late in the season. Maybe we all can start working on this next season???

I would have to disagree here, Google being good at some things, is poor at others, and I am all for a GOOD fig database, where there are pictures of everything, so there is no confusion. Who knows, if it is done right, it could be the best ever, and it is way past time that there was one that detailed everything. A great fig database here could really put this forum WAY OUT THERE!!!

This has been discussed at a degree...I would like to see this happen.
But we would need both caprified and uncaprified pics so people from all over can get a good idea of a given variety.

An easy-to-browse and search variety database will be invaluable and attract tons of traffic. It does not need to be complicated or guarded by "experts". Few entries such as Zone and location of entry, caprified or not, pots or inground, age of tree and few other inputs will go a mile to make finding relevant data easier. Members' feedback can correct any inaccuracies.

Easy data entry will encourage quality and quantity entries. I for one have way more data than I would post as individual reports. If I know data will be accessible and useful for more people in similar conditions, I would love to share raw data not just selected cool few pictures.

Sounds like a lot of work and maintenance.

It would be cool to rate figs by zones and be able to filter top varieties for a given zone.

Am I the only person who asked Rigo how much he wanted for his database project?

That one could easily get tuned up to be a great database, but it takes a fig nerd.

You know that's a dang good idea, I don't think he has done anything with it in ages.
You did ask him?

Yeah, but I never got an answer.

Yeah, but I never got an answer.
All he ever responded to me with is a bunch of crying laughing emojis, the same day Richard Doubtfire and Ross came back.

I don't have the money for it, but you guys seem to have deep pockets. I was gonna post everything I ever ripened on there, but then Rigo threatened to sue Lance and I ditched out. But the bones are good, a dedicated bunch like this one, crowdfund it on figbid, take it over, I'd be down for that!

It's just, what does he want for it?

I think if one was to purchase a database. I would purchase the old F4F varieties list. And make it more user friendly and add to it. But a new database would be great. But we would need more than just money. We need collector's to get involved. Maybe we can get them involved by saying. If you add a fig to the database. With description and photo's. You can say info and photo's by. Let's say Harvey from figaholics. Hope Harvey does not mind me using his name. But it might help build the database faster and give some sales or at least some credit to the person posting the info. When I was a Kid the Zoo would chisel your name in a big wall if you donated certain animals. Mine was supposed to be for donating some rare color variants of snakes I caught. But I never did check the wall to see if they did.

If he will take lint for the database I'm like....a millionaire.
That's how deep my pockets are...lol

I really liked Lances site when he had it up of course.
Very cool how he had synonyms listed, most had pictures.
But a very well done layout.
It's too bad he took it down.
