Brazos Bottom Red

Howdy From Texas!

Anyone here know of a source for Brazos Bottom Red? I believe that a Figbid seller, figbidness, is the originator from a mother tree in their family out in the Bryan-College Station area. Sadly, I live in Texas, but finding rooted cuttings or trees is difficult.

Best,
Heather

I have heard really good things from some folks with fairly young trees. They are supposed to produce large red figs, so you know I'm in.

I don't know where in Texas you live but I found a couple places that have good fig trees. In Mineola there is Bob Wells nursery. They have 2 year old trees 3'-4' tall for $45. IIRC they have a couple more varieties than what they show online. There is also Texas Tree Farm in Waxahachi. They have 2 year old trees 3'-4' tall for $35. Also the one I mentioned already Little Bexar Farm near Waco. He has rooted cuttings on figbid, or you can contact him there to make an appointment to go to his nursery. I am interested in any other nurseries in the areas that I mentioned, or near Tyler. If you find a source for Brazos Bottom Red please let me know. It sounds interesting.

Will do! There are a few gentlemen here in the Houston area who may have cuttings later in the year, possibly rooted cuttings next year. I will update as I hear about opportunities.

I don’t know too much about that variety, but I think I’ll hold off for right now. I do appreciate it though. I’ve got a good bit going on right now and summer is just ramping up lol.

My friend is going to look over his inventory over the weekend and I’m waiting for a reply from Grey Ghost. I’ll let you know when he/they reply!

Ok, grey ghost says he has a tiny rooted cutting. Didn’t mention price or anything. So he may not be wanting to sell it at this time or something.

My friend said if he doesn’t have any little ones he can start an air layer and ship it out.

I would be happy to pay for an airlayer and shipping or in-person pickup, depending on where he lives.

Houston spring plus weather is definitely jumpstarting my greenery. We have had tons of red mulberries and even a few large breba figs!

From looking at all the photos from the original owner of this variety, this is clearly a Mt. Etna fig. Other than the reddish skin, all else look the same as my Hardy Chicago.

Look at the leaves:

Hey there, RS! I am very happy to pitch a tent at your place and run a head to head taste test! Checking in - Do you have any rooted cuttings of your Hardy Chicago or St. Rita coming up?

I get a lot of both. I always want to downsize and yet I continue to grow more. Most of my friends do not want any of my fig plants. LOL.
