Black Celeste

I would take the descriptions on Fig Database with a small grain of salt. It takes snippets of conversations from outside its website to develop a description. I'm not saying every entry is right or wrong just that the summary can be weighted on the source it comes from.

Agree 100%... You can put it down to any number of factors... and the source is definitely often a factor.

One of the things I can say pretty definitively is that the same exact fig can often grow very differently in different areas. An experience recorded buy a grower can be vastly different from someone else in the same hardy zone. There are so many factors that can affect results. Sunlight, water, soil, nutrients, day length....

Thanks @ETXfigs and @DCallahan ! With the premium varieties I never have too many of each, because I mostly sell oit of those cuttings. But as a few get to shippable size and hardened off, I add them to the web site. :). Black Celeste is such a pretty fig
I see that the Black Celeste is already gone. Are you going to have anymore of those for sale this year? The NV1 looks incredible BTW.

I second you thoughts, but the bidders probably just aren't aware of Chesapeake Figs website. He is a member here, a great guy, and a fantastic grower.
Chesapeakefigs.com
I was not aware of this great little website. But from now on I will be looking. Great fig varieties, and super healthy looking. I might even pull the trigger on one of the 17 varieties he had up.

I have 3 regular Celeste and I wasn't really interested in getting an Improved Celeste but a local nursery has 2 gallon Improved Celeste for $20. It's hard to pass up just because of the price and no shipping cost, but I don't know how much difference there is in IC and regular Celeste. If there isn't much difference then I don't want it. Is it really improved? For that matter, when talking about Celeste figs, should some of the LSU figs be included in the discussion, like Tiger for example? I am just wondering if Black Celeste is worth the cost, and if I should buy Improved Celeste when I already have 3 regular Celeste.
Black Celeste ripening for me in PA. In my opinion it’s a good tasting fig but is much better when left to hang as you can see by the middle photo. How it does in ground and with moisture will be the key to it becoming something I would say is great.

It seems pretty expensive. Is it that good? There is two of them on figbid right now. One has 17 bids and is up to $123. The other one has 52 bids and is up to $102. What I don't understand is why they don't just go buy it from Chesapeake Figs for $75.
That’s where I bought mine plus others from him, they are quality plants, well packaged also…. One of your posts lead me to his website…

Mine is fruiting like crazy so far...I'm going to get all the pics I can of all the Celeste types I have.
I'm not good at documenting but I'm gonna give it a try. lol

I was very fortunate to get mine free from one of the fig community originals.
I would Ike to see your list … how does Texas Peach perform for you …

Well like I've stated prior, I am growing many Celeste type figs, Blue, Black, The One, Texas Peach, Classic, Hunt, Stallion...seems like there is 1 or 2 more.

The One was really good last year.

I'm going to try to get a comparison this year, if the critters don't get them all. lol
I'd love to get such experiential comparison. I'm growing IC and regular C, but I've been really curious about Black and The One.

What I’ve heard on improved Celeste was its ability to not drop fruit, earlier, more resilient, etc, nothing to do with taste.
Yes, that's what I heard too - and that IC has larger fruit.

Regular Celeste though has an edge in terms of cold-hardiness. I read an LSU article some time ago that regular Celeste is the most cold hardy of all Celeste types. I'm curious if this has been confirmed by our cold areas growers?

That looks delicious and early. I know that someone fairly close to me grows in in ground and on my side of the state we are a little cooler than you are.

I'm sure that I am out of room, but Black Celeste along with Campaniere are the two that I am after this cutting season.
