Fellow Figfanatics, earlier today, FigVicious and I spent a bit more than 3 hours pruning five heirloom, unknown, Portuguese fig trees. We came back with the pictured cuttings.

If you think the CCGP should continue giving away, we can accommodate those wishes. If however, members are getting tired of possibly receiving free cuttings, these UNKNOWNS can make their way to the chipper.

LET US KNOW BY REPLYING TO THIS THREAD.

We’ve come up with some creative names, but all of the cuttings harvested today are TRUE UNKNOWNS from Portugal.

They sound expensive! LOL

Variety #1: DeAngelo’s Baga Verde
Variety #2: Frank’s Irma Fraca
Variety #3: DeAngelo’s Rubi Escuro
Variety #4: Frank’s A Fera
Variety #5: Portuguese Profundo Desconhecido

at worst people could always use rootstock! but also if you have descriptions that would be awesome.

Also dont forget to give away to your local community, im sure a lot of people who live near you would be happy for some free fig cuttings. plus, we can hook them and get new members :)
 
Here is some of the information Rocco was able to obtain from his friend:

ALL ARE COMMON AND RIPEN FIGS FROM IN GROUND GROWING. ALL GROW UNPROTECTED DURING NJ WINTERS.

Variety #1: Medium sized green fig with red berry pulp. Had very little winter die back.
Variety #2: Green fig with red pulp. It seems to display more leggy growth and had a bit more die back.
Variety #3: A darker fig with deep red pulp. Seemed to be a vigorous tree. The owner claimed it had the best flavor in 2025.
Variety #4: This tree was a BEAST. The hanging figs reminded me of WM#1. They were larger green/grey figs with a red pulp. The
owner said this fig lacked punch this year but was AMAZING in 2024. There was almost no die back and new
growth was both thick and vigorous.
Variety #5: We know least about this one. The owner stated that it was a green fig with pinkish pulp. It looked to have modest
vigor and was a bit leggy.

If I have made any incorrect statements, I will ask Rocco to correct me.
 
I’m so new at fig growing- everything has been an ‘unknown’ hahaha! Sometimes my head hurts from all the research trying to learn what they all are. However, I’m not growing for a business - just for fruit for family and neighbors, and fun for me so it doesn’t matter to me if I don’t know what it is. I just love growing things because it makes me happy. It would be fun to ‘see what it is’.

For those of you who are curious of these trees here is the 411. I am a Realtor here in NJ and Frank is a lender who i do business with and one day Frank saw some posts on my Instagram and messaged me about some trees in his daughter's yard. His daughter bought the home from a Portuguese gentleman 4 years ago who told her these trees are from Portugal. He did not give any details as to how they got here just that he doesn't protect them at all and Franks daughter was getting really annoyed on how these trees are growing all over the place into each other and blocking the pathways around her house and garden. She called her dad who then called me. Opiem10 and I went there this morning like the surgical doctors we are and performed surgery on all 5 trees. I myself took a few cuttings from each tree to experiment and get my propagating game up to the next level so these are my experimental cuttings as I have sourced 99% of all my varieties from known sellers. I live in Union County NJ and there is a very very very huge Portuguese community especially in my town and it seems that every Portuguese person I know has at least one fig tree in their yard just like my entire Italian family has a minimum of 1 fig tree in their yard. Italian and Portuguese people take growing fig trees very serious as do all of us on here.

I would l love a big package to use for rootstock mostly, and obviously to try as well. But I don’t “need” them so I’ll let others go first and if you end up with a bunch of extra I’ll be more than happy to take them!

When we went to the DeAngelo residence today, all of the trees were dormant and three had shriveled, unripe figs hanging from them. If we give them away, it will be up to members to taste test and provide feedback to members. I can only assume that a family brought these figs over from Portugal because they were family favorites. Only testing across the country would prove the value of these unknowns.

How exciting! Our group’s own fig trial! We should each keep growing data to compile later!
