It’s not always possible to provide cuttings to every interested member every time a donation is made. Personally, I want to give a good number of cuttings to each recipient to “soften” the shipping fees both USPS and UPS are now charging.

If members receiving cuttings are successful in rooting multiples of a variety and are then willing to offer any extra rooted cuttings to those who missed out originally, it would exemplify the altruism that would likely make TorontoJoe jump for joy.

I plan to run something in here on the duplicates from the Thanksgiving day pack I won after they all root. Will just be shipping cost in the spring. Gotta speak confidently on the cuttings so they all root.
 
The Giveaway for the 5 varieties of Unknown Heirloom Portuguese cuttings will go off tomorrow, Sunday, December 14th.

For those old enough to remember the old Kmart Bluelight specials, it can start at any time. So I ask, "Who needs sleep?"

Regarding Portuguese Unknow Variety #2: I believe that the (subtle) difference is in the tilde:
IRMÃ FRACA = WEAK SISTER
IRMA FRACA = WEAK IRMA

@Opiem10 : Would you agree that you forgot to add the tilde in your earlier post, and that the "real name" comes with a tilde:
Variety #2: Frank's Irmã Fraca ("Weak Sister) ? ;)

Not forgetful; just lazy!!!

Everyone receiving these cuttings should always just consider them as UNKNOWNS.

The names were applied to give a somewhat fun appeal to these Portuguese trees and the game to follow. Variety #2 grows right next to Variety #1. Both are green figs with red pulp. Variety #2 just didn't seem to grow as vigorously as its "sister". Variety #3 was a dark fig with Ruby Red pulp. Variety #4 was a true beast, huge, vigorous, and still holding a lot of December figs. Variety #5 is said to be a green fig with white pulp (amber pulp?) but the taste profile is unknown.

If giving any of these cuttings or rooted cuttings to the fig community, I would refrain from using the made up names. We don't want to spread more synonyms out there if these trees exist with another name. Keep the names for your own internal records or entertainment.

What should we be calling them then Figfanatic unknown? Portuguese unknown? 😅 is there a city name that can go with the UNK label?

Hi Lauren, sorry to say but you missed the frenzy of giving away over 400 unknown Portuguese heirloom cuttings by two days.

Nearly 30 winners were awarded in a 4 hour time span this past Sunday.

After I ship all winning packages, I will see what cuttings remain to give away. Just look for a new thread with the follow up giveaway.
