2 more pawpaw!

Well a nice cloudy day to transplant something, so my 2nd pair of pawpaws went in ground.
That makes 4, but only 2 varieties.
Potomac & Wabash....2 of each.

Now the long wait....hoping not too long.
I will be putting a protective barrier around them and a shade cloth over them after I eat some tasty B&G! :)

Nice! I picked up a Wabash and a KSU Chappell last spring and hoping to pick up a 275-48 this summer. That will give me one selection from each of the 3 well known breeder/breeding programs. Wabash from Peterson , Chappell from the KSU breeding program, and 275-48 which I believe was a Jerry Lehman cross/find. I think I am most anticipating Wabash. Nice looking little trees you got there. 👍
 
I'm hoping to grab a few more at some point, I have some seeds going for some root stock.
I see wabash & potomac are some of the largest varieties out there.
So I wanted to maximize the harvest by putting in 2 of each.

Now I just need a couple different flavors. :)

Ok my husband and I are having a debate over what is B&G. I say it’s beer and grub but he says barbecue and Guinness.

So I’m trying to clean up some family land and I found a pawpaw patch nobody knew about the end of last year. It’s rather large, no telling how long it’s been there. I’ve never had pawpaw so I’m excited. There were blooms earlier this year. A friend had given me two small pawpaw trees last year and I might take them over there to plant as well.

I’ve never eaten one but I hear they are very good. Strange how I’ve never seen one at the grocery store.

pawpaw's might be my favorite next to figs.
Throw up some pics if you want. :)

Here are a couple of pics that give an idea of the size. This is about the time I started cleaning it up some. You can see a cedar tree down. It goes way back in the woods. There is a creek that runs to the left back in there. I seen some blooms on it earlier this year so I'm hopeful for some fruit.
 
From everything I have watched they seems to like being by streams or creeks...mine are planted fairly close to my pond.
But not too close. Lol
 
Great looking little trees. I have three that are now, finally, about 3 to 4 feet tall and growing well. They bloomed for the first time this year, but no fruit set…which I’m okay with. They are still a bit small and I want them to focus on growth. I put in 4 more little ones this spring. And growing some seedlings for root stock. Paw paw is becoming one of my favorites too!

How long did it take to gain that height?
I have one pair that went in the ground last year, and the second pair recently.
 
The little trees I was given last year I left in full sun. They were that size or smaller. This guy has a good video about pawpaw and sunlight.

Well, when I received those first 3 trees in spring of 2022, the were little tiny twigs. Quite a bit smaller than yours. I potted them up for that growing season. I maybe should have planted them that year, but I was thinking that I would baby them in pots for one season and then plant them. They put on very good growth that year and then I planted them in their permanent location in spring of 2023. So I guess from little twigs in 2022 to the size they are now in 2025. They do seem pretty slow growing, especially that first year in the ground. But it is probably me just being a little impatient also. But they seem to be doing pretty well now.

I am very impatient lol.
The two potted o es were growing awesome in the pots.
The two that spent the winter in the ground are waking up slowly.
I guess I'll just let them to their thing.
 
I am a bit envious that you folks can grow Paw-Paws. I have yet to taste but the "hype" is mouth watering. Growing paw paws in coastal Southern California is a bit of a challenge (chill hours around 100 hrs), but some home gardeners have successfully zone pushed after trialing a few varieties. At our daughters urging, we have a year old stick in a five gallon pot in the shade. Many years of crossing fingers to go.
