Anyone can get into grafting - I used one of those $20 tools that look like some frankensheers when I first started. I used the Omega cuttings head and it works well as long as the size of RS and scion are the right size and the same size. It would be fine to stick with that if you aren't comfortable with razor sharp knives. Mine has a scissor thing at the tip that I did cut myself with so I ground it off, not a crucial part of the tool.
If you have smaller cuttings (thin ones) I would definitely use whip and tongue - a little harder to get the hang of maybe, but they work very well and take as well as anything else. Modified cleft/banana/chip bud grafts (in the order of preference) are OK for larger diameter or mismatched size stock, but I only do those if I have too.
