Blackberries

My wild black caps have blue stems? and the orange caps do have the yellow. Your black caps have red stems? I tip rooted it and it took has 2 nice canes sprouting now.
mine are red but they have a sort of powdery coating that can make them look a bit blue.

So this isn’t the sort of plant where tip pruning is going to promote lateral branches and increase yield?

Are there ever cases where thinning promotes better fruiting?

I guess I’m sort of wondering how much I should treat these like a more typical fruit tree
It very much is. Some will get extremely long if you don't prune them back, that's issue number one. One year, I let my floricane bush grow freely and the canes grew about 12 feet long. I had to wrap them around the 8' cage. These days, I let them grow about 4-6 feet, I vary the lengths to fill the cages evenly, then pinch, which forces them to grow laterals. Yes, that increases the yield.

Same with primo canes, but I pinch them at about 3-4'. Here is a pic of my Heritage last fall:

All those laterals are loaded.

Another thing to keep in mind, is that it's a good idea to thin out your canes. My well-established Heritage sends 2-3 dozens shoots each spring... take a look at it today:

That's way too many. I will reduce this to about 9 best, strongest canes.

If not, I get smaller berries, that tend to be crumbly. Besides, all that overcrowding promotes disease and reduces fruit quality.

100% the picture on your pots is "black caps"
I cant tell you how excited i am about the "orange caps" hopefully i can propagate some more next year and start sharing
I now think what these are is Rubus 'Royalty', a Purple Raspberry, which is a cross between a red raspberry and black cap raspberry (Rubus occidentalis).

I hear you about the orange caps seeing how my family loves yellow raspberries... they are incredibly enjoyable. I love them too.
Someone from Canada sells these on Etsy.... I bought a plant to try.

these actually do look like black raspberries (r. occidentalis) maybe youre picking them early?
It's possible, but I sometimes let them ripen a little too much, they'd get really soft, but they still didn't look exactly like black caps in the pictures.
Here is how they look:

and here is a bowl of perfectly ripened ones, I wouldn't want them to ripen even a bit more:

If you’re talking floricane blackberries, you’ll want to pinch the main growth tip in Summer once it reaches desired height, then can keep pinching laterals once they get to desired length - similar to pinching fig branches in that regard.

Mine are ready to pinch about a week or two prior to harvesting the blackberries from the floricanes, so towards the end of June. I pinch mine in the 5’ range and prune back the laterals when they get too long. I’ll usually go back and prune the laterals again in Spring for clean up and remove any dead branching. This past Winter we hit 0F with high winds and I had to prune back many laterals and cut back a lot of the blackberries between 2-3’.

yeah these do look like purple ones to me.

It was one of those things you see everywhere.... here, I found a picture for you.... I got mine from a small nursery by the highway near St Catharines, but I see these pots everywhere... HD, Rona, CT, etc. even Loblaws...

Interestingly, and that's something I did not know at the time, the raspberries in the picture look like black caps,

rubus-occidentalis-bristol-black-raspberry.jpg

which is synonymous to black raspberries, but what I am growing looks like this:

Still, these are fantastic. We love them, and I already propagated more and will likely add another bush one this season, unless all those that I am evaluating this year wow me...

But I did add a couple of black cap varieties last year. These are also floricanes. Haven't tasted them yet, but they look great this year, and I hope to get a good harvest...

That's funny. Those containers do look very familiar. I probably saw them at Sheridan Nurseries.

Thanks! I'm going to see if I can track some down

I'm really going down a rabbit hole searching for the ideal raspberry for my wife. I was wondering if anyone has had experience with raspberries that are primocane/floricane? (Everbearing?)

I'm getting tight for berry space and want to get the most bang for my buck. But I don't want to sacrifice on quality. I think I have room for a few more. I want to get a Hascap going

I grow fall gold which is everbearing.

Haskap is great in baked goods but it can be a little tart to eat fresh. Or maybe im doing it wrong lol

I just got myself a heritage raspberry plant. I figure it’s a primocane and they’re well known. I can decide later if I feel like keeping wood for the second year

I think I’m going to put it in a raised bed and dig a barrier down so I can build some walls to contain it.

So for berries now I’m up to the Heritage raspberry, Prime Ark Freedom blackberry and Saskatoon berry.

I was under the impression that Hascaps were sweet?

I think I want to add one or two more. The garden centre I went to is tiny and the only other they had was Nova Raspberry and another that was golden. I should have noted the name. I should probably do a proper blueberry. New rabbit hole to go down. Have to find the perfect one for my area

Ponca or Big Daddy are good blackberries. I have both and Ponca is very sweet, Big Daddy is moderately sweet (acidic) but a lot bigger!

For Blueberries I’m growing Titan, Krewer, Pink Lemonade & Chipewa :)

My climate is pretty close to yours. I’ll look to see if I can locate any of them locally. I think I should diversify and so a blueberry next…. Although I guess the Saskatoon is kind of close.

I grow all berries pretty much, if you’re interested I would say look at some loganberries. A bit scarce to find but they’re pretty good! The better of all my berries / brambles haha
