First ever fig pops

Don’t know if this is good or not or even if it matters but 12 of the 16 fig pops are budding.

So far all 16 look healthy and the pops have signs of humidity condensation on the inside of the pops which I assume we want?

On a side note, sadly I managed to kill my last years cuttings through up potting way too soon and or planting in ground way too soon.

However, and I really don’t know anything about this variety but a Mavra Sika cutting placed in ground way too soon survived the winter with minimal protection and well the little guy is budding. That says something about Mavra Sika because we had a very cold winter with a few nights below zero degrees.

The Mavra Sika was protected by a plastic pot, some straw and a tarp. The exact same way as all the others.

Edit: The Mavra Sika, and the Strawberry Verte (also survived the horrible winter 2025) both came through the forum for being a newbie member. So, I don't know what Mavra Sika this one is since there's several called this name from different sources. Strangely enough, it could be the Mavra Sika from my hometown if this is the Bass version but who knows? Mavra Sika = Black Fig
I also got Mavra Sika when I joined the forum a year ago. We probably have the same version of that variety. I got figs from it last year. It was very very good. It's my only Mt Etna.

Update

All but one has green growth but that one does have roots

So far these have roots

Great news!!

one of the MGM's now is showing roots!

So, all varieties have roots, just a matter of keeping them going!

And here is a little surprise, I was moving my tool bag and I saw something and pulled it out--it was two cuttings! A Cessac and a Croze, I think they came from Kremp. So I have two more fig pops to set up. I have no idea how long they've been in the tool bag but they look nice and healthy. Have them in the fridge for now. Well, they either came from Kremp or Figaholics.

Another tip is not to make them so long. They don’t need to be that tall at all. Just 1-2 nodes under and 1-2 above. It’s easier to up
Pot and easier for the roots to fill up when they are shorter.
Small sample size, but I have had much better rooting success with 5-plus-node cuttings that I subdivided into smaller 2-4 node cuttings than I did with 5-plus-node cuttings that I started as-is.

I just used what I got, for the most part they were all 3 to maybe 5 nodes.

I did put most of them under the ground. I suppose cause a lot of them I’ve seen was not that much above the dirt and another well known fig guy said when planting your fig in the ground make sure to burry a few nodes underground so in case something happens and they need to come back from ground level it gives them a better chance to regrow.

On a side note, I’ve started these fig pops with no heat mat or grow lights—the wife won’t let me have them so I kept them in the downstairs bathroom with the door closed to keep it warm.

The wife also likes a cold house lol

Anyways, they’re slowly showing roots and the tops are growing. I did bring them out of the bathroom and put them on the kitchen table where they get some indirect sunlight.

I did have to water them once because the dirt mix seemed to be drying out—plus they kind of looked thirsty to me.

If it matters, unk prosciutto and GNAF have the strongest tops.

All the unk prosciutto’s have rooted and seem to be the most aggressive in this batch.

IMG_8564.jpegI’m happy to report that all the fig pops have rooted.

There are two new fig pops that I just did on Sunday, Mothers Day. One Cessac and one Croze, two cuttings I bought a while back from Kremp but somehow left them in the garage through winter.

But of the original 16
Proscuitto unk
GNAF
Croze
Sangue Dolce
Michael Grace Mystery

All but one has some sort of top growth but even the one with no growth seems to have good root development

Since I don’t have grow lights or a heat mat, I have been keeping them in a warm bathroom and move them to the kitchen table to get some indirect sunlight.

If they’re all successfully potted I’ll gift some away to family and friends.
