ISO Black Madeira

BM is hard for me to root. I tried to take some from my neighbors tree and start earlier this season. Out of 8 I got 4 are rooting real good. The others never made it. I bought a grow tent I am trying to make ideal conditions for them to root. I have like 7-8 wm#1 rooting good, 2 Molla vermello and the rest are a mix of Lda and de la roca. It’s all about finding what works. Lots of failed cuttings.
There is really no hard to root variety after doing hundreds of them. There are hard to root cuttings and you can tell after going through enough of them. The general rule of thumb is just trying to get cuttings from healthy trees and preferably before they get winter damages.

I got 2 good sized cuttings from @DCallahan in the mail yesterday. They should keep me busy for awhile, so for now I’m no longer actively looking for a BM.
I am happy for you. I am hoping to get a BM type other than Violeta and BM Moonlight. I have some news for you that you might find interesting. I know that you have been interested in growing Schar Israel. I received a Schar Israel cutting last spring from the forum community cutting program. It has grown vigorously into an awkward two trunk tree. I decided to do an air layer and turn it into two trees. The air layer does not seem to be working out. So I thought about it and since I was given the cutting by the generous members of the forum and it grew into a two trunk tree, I should give half of the tree back to the forum. After these figs ripen that are swelling now indoors, I'm going to put it outside to go dormant. After it's dormant I will cut one side of the tree into cuttings. It's not a big fig tree so I will only get a couple of good cuttings out it. I think that you have been wanting this variety, so if you want two cuttings, I will send them to you after it goes dormant. Then you can grow it and someday share it with another member. Schar Israel might be available from the community cutting program again this next season, so this is probably not a big deal. Here is a picture of it so you can see how it's growing with two trunks and also a pic of the two figs that are swelling now. I'm going to keep the taller side and chop the other side off. The picture of the tree was atleast a month ago. It has gotten larger since then.

That’s awesome!

It has been about 4 or 5 weeks since I started the air layer and I had not seen any roots, so today I opened it up and this is what I saw. I put the air layer back together and picked all the figs off that side of the tree. I believe that the roots were growing slow because there was 7 large figs on that side. I think roots will grow faster now and then I can send you the rooted air layer plant. Unless you would rather have cuttings, in that case I will remove this jar that I'm using to air layer. Do you want cuttings or rooted air layer?

Oh wow looking good. Honestly I’d prefer the Airlayer as my rooting ability is questionable still.

If you are watching the other thread, as these figs are swelling, I'm starting to doubt that they are true to type. There is just not enough people growing this variety to get any good information. If my figs turn out to be different than the figs in the original post of that thread, it seems difficult to tell which one is true. Sorry about this problem. We will figure it out and if I don't have Schar Israel, we can probably get you some cuttings.

I am watching the other thread. If it turns out to not be Schar then not a big thing. I appreciate the thought at the very least.

Those people are annoying. 😂
I’m one of those people 🤪 The key is to leave them alone. Get the initial moisture correct then let them be. I only graft nowadays. The amount of care potted trees need made me cull nearly all of them.
I got BM KK cuttings to graft this year. I have CC, but a big grower in CA really thinks that BM is different and tastier, so …. 🤣

Grafting looks cool. I hope to learn it when my trees are big enough to graft onto.

I’m just letting my BM sit with some heat. Checking for roots every so often, but other than that I’m pretending it doesn’t exist. Time will tell what it will do.

I am like that with two hative and two Campaniere that I really want. Only started last week and I feel like a kid on Christmas having to wait.
For sure I have several I’m begging to root haha. The more I research on what I have the more excited I get too. I forgot my meds and ended up researching varieties etc all night so my wife was mad this morning 😅

I had a lot of difficulty with BMKK. No problem to layer... but from cuttings I had several fails. The first I got going was sent as a small bare root.
So far I’ve only had one fail, but like I said I totally screwed the pooch on that one.(first cutting ever and very minimal research) These I have a good mix, have heat, have some humidity and I talk nice to them so I’m cautiously expecting at least one of the three to root.
