Figs 2025

Last time I looked at the Lowes here, they only had 1 Beer's Black and some Little Miss Figgy. The LMF were from a different source than the VdB and BB and they looked more like what people describe as tissue culture. "Gangely" if that is a word. Lol
I bought the Beers Black from Lowes about a month or so ago and I have to say we planted it inground and that tree was in full sun without any protection in the 100* heat wave and it never drooped or died. It stood straight up strong like it was only 70°F. Couldn’t believe how tough it was. Had to use shade cloth on everything else. Now I’m wondering how tough it would be without winter protection 🤔

Sounds like in the heat they do very well in ground. My VdB and BB are the first to wilt in the heat in pots. But they are super stars. The VdB that was about 1' tall from Lowes this spring, now it's almost 5' (including the pot) and loaded with figs and still forming new figlets and green growth. The BB is not quite as tall but I pinched that one. I will probably post some pics of them soon. I don't know how it will do in the winter in your area.

I finally got some ripe figs other than Celeste. These are LSU Gold main crop. For some reason these are not very big. They are less than 20 grams. This is the tree's 2nd season. I think next year the figs will be much larger. The nursery where I got the tree does sell two other varieties of honey fig. I wonder if maybe it is not LSU Gold. They taste good but not very sweet. I've heard people use the word "refreshing" to describe a fig eating experience. That is what comes to mind. If these figs were huge, I would enjoy eating a lot of them.

Are those main crop or breba?
That does seem small for Gold, but size can come with age.
They look nice though.

LSU Purple and WM#1 are next on the menu. Both are starting to swell. LSU Purple only has 2 figs on the tree and it is a 2nd year tree. WM#1 is loaded up with figs.

@ETXfigs - The little flecks on the figs and leaves... are they stuck on? In the pics it sort of looks like thrips.

I don't want to alarm you but figured I wasn't helping if I said nothing. It might be dust.... hard to tell.

I sprayed bonide sulfur a couple days ago. I don't know what the flecks are. I will look closer at them tomorrow.

I think those spots on the figs do not wipe off. I thought it was normal. They shouldn't be there?

I really don't know that it's anything... I probably wouldn't have noticed it if not for the spots on the leaves as well...

They look nice and green. Are the flecks on the leaves stuck on as well?

Don't panic. The plant looks healthy. I see stuff like this all the time and it's nothing. All the fig trees near my Bronze Fennel plants look like this because they're covered with fennel pollen.

I'm only saying it may be worth a closer look. I have had damage from thrips that leave little white spots like this. They actually have never gone very deep. They've always stopped as soon as they hit latex.

If the spots are uniform and regular, figs often have these. It they are random, it may be a sign of bugs

I think maybe it's something superficial.... look at this earlier pic. Something is all over your leaves. Do you do any woodworking near the plants?

I don't know what that white stuff is. Sometimes there is a lot of it. I thought maybe when the rain runs off the metal roof over the patio that something was dripping down onto the figs. I also thought maybe it could be excrement from all the leaf hopper sharpshooter insects. I will look at it more tomorrow in the daylight. You have a good eye.

Maybe nothing…, but better the things you know

@Figgin' A put me on to these pocket microscopes… This isn’t the same brand, but I don’t know that they’re all that different… I would’ve never known, but it helped me identify fig but mite on one of my trees.

If you can get one that connects to your cell phone that makes it even easier to get a picture of whatever you’re dealing with
