Smith (I Get it Now)

Assuming this is true to type, I just had my first ever Smith fig. I totally get the hype now.

This tree can't be older than a year and the fruit already tastes delicious. It was mildly sweet and had a rich raspberry/strawberry flavor. The ostiole also had the most beautiful drop of nectar sealing it shut. There were some other flavor notes in there, but I would need more tastes to figure out.

My wife and daughter shared this fig with me and my daughter immediately asked for more.

Enjoy the photos!

Solid variety, though some complain about it not having good/enough flavor. Try letting it ripen a bit more, until it starts to look 'ugly' and develops characteristic cracks. I think you will enjoy it more.

Those look great! Thanks for the tip. Most of my figs are new to me, so I am still figuring out the timing.

I noticed yours has a neck while mine is squat shaped. Could that be due to it being a young tree or just this particular fig?

Hm, I see it now. I have no idea. It could be because it was the first fig from the tree; sometimes they are a bit wonky. But what you see in my pictures above are also from the first year tree (taken last summer). This year's crop is still ripening.

Here is what my very first Smith off the tree looked.

I have both a Smith and a Texas BA-1 they both are delicious with identical flavor, but my Texas BA-1 outperforms the Smith every year in vigor, fruit size and production. Both are planted in a 25 gallon pots and with the exact same soil, same sun exposure. It is possible the Smith has some disease such as mosaic virus that hold it back, but regardless I rather clone the Texas BA-1 than the Smith if I wanted more of them.
