Zone 9.@GoodFriendMike What's your zone? There's nothing like homegrown artichokes, they're so tender and delicious, I miss them!
Bro, put some in the ground, pronto, then thank me later.Zone 9.
I just bought a bunch of purple and some green globes. Purple Romagna, suppose to be a chef's favorite. I'm gonna try to grow a bunch of crowns for 2027 and change the game out here. Gotta figure an overwintering method I like. Artichokes are rare out here.I may have some seeds in the freezer. I know I bought some meaning to grow them. Think I even bought seeds for both the green and purple types. I will have to look.
Been awhile since I seen a photo but don't you have a barn on your property? If so might be able to put them in there.I just bought a bunch of purple and some green globes. Yeah, I've got a barn...Been awhile since I seen a photo but don't you have a barn on your property? If so might be able to put them in there.
Just will have to keep the animals from getting to them. Artichokes are in many stores here. But they are not always the best.
Been a long long time since I’ve even eaten one because they are ridiculously expensive.
Here's some bees in cardoon flowers (like a smaller artichoke, people eat the leaf stalks.)

I just planted a bunch. I wanna see if I can dig up the roots for winter storage. I'll see what happens. Gotta have some again.
What were wrong with them? Didn't taste good? They don't really thrive in this area, zone 9a. I planted a couple plants a few years ago and they made a few but did not do as good as they should. Wish they grew better here.
I bought 2 plants, put them each in a 25 gallon pot. Planted in the Spring, they grew big bushy plants but artichokes were small and not plentiful. I've never heard of anyone growing them in this area, decided they were not worth the trouble for what I was getting. Probably been 15 years ago. What were wrong with them? Didn't taste good?
