Anybody talk artichokes?

I may have some seeds in the freezer. I know I bought some meaning to grow them. Think I even bought seeds for both the green and purple types. I will have to look.

I just bought a bunch of purple and some green globes. Purple Romagna, suppose to be a chef's favorite. I'm gonna try to grow a bunch of crowns for 2027 and change the game out here. Gotta figure an overwintering method I like. Artichokes are rare out here.

Been awhile since I seen a photo but don't you have a barn on your property? If so might be able to put them in there.
Just will have to keep the animals from getting to them. Artichokes are in many stores here. But they are not always the best.

Yeah, I've got a barn...

I was kicking myself when I first had a homegrown one, should have been growing them for years. So freaking good.

I haven't grown them in a couple years because the plants are on the large side and I was trying other stuff. I do love them. And I love that people were able to take this plant which is essentially a thistle and make it food.

If you let them go, the flowers are off the hook awesome and bees love them. They just get in there and snuggle up.

Stuffing them with muddica is my favourite. My mother used to make them for me on my birthday.

Yeah, that was back in San Diego... I miss them! hahaha

I just planted a bunch. I wanna see if I can dig up the roots for winter storage. I'll see what happens. Gotta have some again.

You can definitely grow them as annuals. Although if you could dig them up that would be way better…. Or maybe a basket that you could dig up and keep the root ball together…. I was thinking of something like this for other plants where the bottom of the basket is solid. This way you could just chop down the sides where the roots come out

They don't really thrive in this area, zone 9a. I planted a couple plants a few years ago and they made a few but did not do as good as they should. Wish they grew better here.
What were wrong with them? Didn't taste good?

I bought 2 plants, put them each in a 25 gallon pot. Planted in the Spring, they grew big bushy plants but artichokes were small and not plentiful. I've never heard of anyone growing them in this area, decided they were not worth the trouble for what I was getting. Probably been 15 years ago.
