The $1000 fig tree

I'll be honest that I'm comfortable with whatever you wanna send my way. I've got plenty of plants ready to go as rootstock and can use the greenhouse to accelerate growth. And then ship them back to whoever whenever.

Once the group decides which way they wish to go there is $200 funded from the bank of figless, and yes there are Angelito cuttings as well. @Fig Gazer already has Angelito going so that project would need to go to someone else as well. LOL he set me up with the Angelito to get that passed out to Fig fanatic as well

I'm happy to chip some money in as well

SOUNDS like the consept is taking root ! I wiil also comite $200 dollars towords the first rare cutting purchase .Sounds like some siscilian 33 is being offerd free ? What variety is most wanted ,and expensive ?? IF i am intrusted with a viable one node cutting i will do my best to grow more sion wood from it .Because of living in the BFF zone moving rooted trees is limited to others in this cursed zone !SEE my extensive discusion of a possible structure for a variety fellowship ) in this thread .

going off a few past high dollar sales the list could include white baca, Sicilian 33, lsu st Gabriel, green goblin, cessac. A few others but I’m not remembering many high dollar sales outside of those.

Ondata and Hative seems to be pricey now. When is the best time to take cuttings and graft them? I gotta assume the fall right, because all the growth is green at the moment.

I’ve grafted a handful of cuttings on my well rooted cuttings. The 4x9 would dry out fairly quick so I could control the moisture well. Going off that I would say anytime should work if you can control the conditions they are in. I did plenty in the fall and quite a few recently, the ones with rootstock on the dry side did best while root stock that stayed moist too long pushed a lot of fluid and was harder to maintain a healthy graft. Dormant or not has been the same as long as rootstock and scion are the same. Then again I’m still new to grafting in the grand scheme of things and have a lot of material to play with testing the best way for me. One big factor is the scion be lignified or at least mostly lignified and not fresh green growth.

Yea I didn’t think now was the ideal time for sending green cuttings. I only know that because I’m coming off two weeks of losing some expensive green cuttings from my trees I stuck in soil. Won’t be doing that again.

Is hative that you’re referencing hative d’ argentil or HdA? If so I’m planning to root several of these this winter from my big tree.

FOR best CALIFONIA cuttings they should be taken dormant in mid dec. thru jan . and grafted outdoors from feb thru march ! NOTE: the very succesful HARVEY cuttings follow this time line +- . TAKING GREEN cuttings is always a disadvantage but figs are resilunt and survive a lot . Back east cutting that go dormant in the fall ,can be taken then to avoid freezing to death and stored or grafted in hot houses but not ideal .

I’ll have a pile of trees just ready to graft in 4x9s a few 8 inch sticks should do a dozen or two lol
That is a good point Bofig raised. I usually graft to my potted trees or in ground trees so I don't have rootstock trees just for grafting. Having a bunch ready is really important for a project like this.

For grafting, you can graft any time but you need to adapt your strategy and techniques. I have just done about 20+ grafts with green cuttings in the last few weeks. Most are pushing out already.

Shipping green cuttings needs special care and some luck. The best way is to wait till the fall or early spring to ship and graft fully lignified cuttings. But if you want to beat the clock, you can graft green cuttings now. I usually graft the cut out green shoots as I shape the trees.

I am no expert. I started grafting in my first year because the seller decided to send me a "graft pack", which I didn't even know what it meant. Instead of 1 good size cutting, I got 3 tiny sticks in the graft pack, not to my choosing. I got the refund and was told to keep the graft pack. I used a paring knife from the kitchen to do my first grafts. It worked. That was probably why I never felt the urge to buy a fancy grafting knife.

I should have 2 air layers coming off my S33 tree. However selling some figs is how I keep buying new figs and fund my orchard. I don't want to list them on figbid because I don't want them to bring more than what I think they are worth. I thought about listing them in a private sale as a buy it now. Then that would effect future sales when Kremp or other sellers went to sell intentionally lowering the market. Would this be against figbid policies?

Oddly, it came in a tree pot and looked about 3' tall(in a youtube video?). Now if Im paying a grand for a tree it better be in a 15 gal pot, in tree shape form, with ripening fruit and delivered by the seller to my house, lol. Also, the tree is expected to have cuttings for sale at $100 each.
