It seems pretty expensive. Is it that good? There is two of them on figbid right now. One has 17 bids and is up to $123. The other one has 52 bids and is up to $102. What I don't understand is why they don't just go buy it from Chesapeake Figs for $75.

I second you thoughts, but the bidders probably just aren't aware of Chesapeake Figs website. He is a member here, a great guy, and a fantastic grower.

I knew that he is a member here and I have to admit that had a little bit to do with why I started the thread. I try to keep track of the members here that sell figs. When I'm looking for a certain fig to buy, I try to look first to see if they(forum members) have what I'm looking for. If someone else has it for cheaper, I will get the cheaper one, but I atleast like to check what they have first. The only place that I see Black Celeste available, other than figbid is Chesapeake Figs. The price is not cheap but it's better than the figbid prices. I was very close buying that Black Celeste but I decided to not spend that much because I needed to get some other things like Gnatrol, potting mix, etc. I got Violeta for $35 from Kremp but it seems that $75 for Black Celeste is not a bad deal. I don't think he will have any problems selling them.

Black Celeste survived in ground planting for me in zone 4b/5a. If if fruits in ground is another story but I plan to root as many cuttings as possible and list on figbid this next winter. Start them at 30 and no reserve. My guess is over the next couple years it will be spread enough to lower the price to a lower range.

It does have a different flavor, I don't know if it warrents a price tag that it gets.
It is better than a classic Celeste though.
I have an unk Celeste (Allentown) that I really like, it's one of my favorite figs. It's sweet with a ever so slight berry flavor with a smooth texture, they're small and pretty figs. I'm looking forward to comparing it to the Chincoteague Celeste and the Constans, both from OTBP.

I also have a Blue Celeste (Herman's) and another Celeste (figfanatic) trying to root, they're still alive and look good just no signs of activity yet--of course I don't know what's happening under the soil. When I got the Blue Celeste, I was thinking of the Black Celeste so that was actually a mistake on my part--I've also read that the Blue Celeste and "the One" Celeste might be the same, or if not, really close to each other.

If possible I'm looking forward to comparing all of them to each other.

Well like I've stated prior, I am growing many Celeste type figs, Blue, Black, The One, Texas Peach, Classic, Hunt, Stallion...seems like there is 1 or 2 more.

The One was really good last year.

I'm going to try to get a comparison this year, if the critters don't get them all. lol

Just an assumption but one has to admit that a fully ripe Black Celeste is just an awesome looking type fig, the look alone can make one think it's a better tasting fig to another Celeste imho whether it's reality or something the mind is making one think of the flavor. It definitely looks richer, and to get a fig that looks like that in non wasp area's is just amazing imho.

And to take it a step further, it's a pretty fig in just general fig comparisons so that alone probably fuels the popularity.

everything I’ve seen says black Celeste is a different fig that resembles Celeste and the name comes from that.

Well I am hoping to show the differences this year.
Most likely I will save the pics of all my Celeste types and then make a thread.
I'm going to keep track of ripening times and leaf shapes.

Right now they are all very similar to the same.
All these trees are at least 3 yrs old or more.

I encourage anyone else to do the same, that way we can compare.

Where does sweet Diana fall on this list? Seems like it’s another Celeste to me. I’ve got them now but wasn’t able to get much for ripening last year on its first season.

You know I had that one too, but culled it.
You're right though, it seemed like another one.

I’ve got a brown turkey from Menards that looks exactly like my black Celeste except the flavor. Black Celeste pulp turns darker. My brown turkey looks identical to my Celeste except the skin gets one shade darker. I’ve got a Texas peach, sweet Diana, and a couple more so I’ll grow them next to each other this season and try to compare here also.

I have 3 regular Celeste and I wasn't really interested in getting an Improved Celeste but a local nursery has 2 gallon Improved Celeste for $20. It's hard to pass up just because of the price and no shipping cost, but I don't know how much difference there is in IC and regular Celeste. If there isn't much difference then I don't want it. Is it really improved? For that matter, when talking about Celeste figs, should some of the LSU figs be included in the discussion, like Tiger for example? I am just wondering if Black Celeste is worth the cost, and if I should buy Improved Celeste when I already have 3 regular Celeste.

Ironically the reviews I've seen with IC is that it's not that great of an improvement over regular Celeste's--So my assumption is that if one has it, then fine but if you already have other Celeste's in your collection you're probably fine without it unless you really want it for some reason.

As with all of these similar types or categories I believe the one's that do best in your area are the one's to keep.
