What Is Your Favorite Sweet Pepper?

Not sure if most of you would consider it a sweet pepper haha but Anaheim did the best for me last year. Was able to get a few pounds off a single plant all summer, very productive and no issues. Second would probably be banana peppers, those also did just as good for me but they started off a bit slow! :)
I heard the Anaheim are great for frying… I keep meaning to try them.

Lesya, Ajvarski, Corno Di Toro Rosso,
Someone else recommended Corno Di Toro Rosso to me as Carmen, seems they have the same name. Also it is Bull’s Horn? But it sounds like a good Italian pepper.

I tried growing Ajvarski last year and it didn’t have a chance to take off, but I have too many recommendations for it, so I’m going to try it again.

Someone else recommended Lesya as well and I’ve seen it offered, so I think I’ll check it out.

A bunch of recommendations for Shishito and Jimmy Nardello as well.

A surprising number of recommendations for Banana peppers. They were never my favorite from the store, but maybe home grown are a lot better, or I’ve been eating them wrong.

Appreciate all the recommendations everyone!

Shishito peppers are good but I find they are more seeds than fruit sometimes. Banana peppers depend on the variety and growing condition.

Banana peppers I find easier to grow but don't have the thick walls I need for my pepper sauces. Is anyone aware of a thicker walled sweet banana type pepper? it would be nice to have the reliability and production of the banana with the heft of a bell

Aji Dulce from Puerto Rico is our favorite sweet to grow and it makes excellent sofrito too! It can be harvested at any color stage.
I grow these Mojo Aji peppers from Johnny's Seeds... Sweet, citrusy, and mildly hot. We like them fresh and grilled, but they also make a delicious pepper sauce. Love this pepper. It's also very productive, and pepper flies don't bother it.

I grew banana peppers for a couple of seasons but dropped them for the same reason. I used them for pickling but ever since I discovered Golden Greek (Pepperoncini) peppers, they are my go to for pickling.

For sweet, thicker walled banana-type, try these:

Also, Croatian Seeds has a lot of good selections

The Golden Greek is indeed excellent. I may need to bring that one back into the rotation.

Never heard of Croatian seeds. They have many options that look great!

Shame that the corno di toro is a hybrid. I really like saving my own seeds.

I meed to watch out that pepper fly you helped me identify. Looking forward to a better harvest this year

Mad hatter failed me twice 😞 only got about 3 decent ones last season
It did well here but I found for me the flavour was a bit underwhelming….. not bad…. Just not on the level of most others

What happened to yours? Just didn’t produce?

We’ve been discussing flavour…. But which of these larger pepper would you consider good producers? For me, sometimes the bigger varieties don’t give me many fruit.

Yeah didn’t flower as much as my other varieties. Grew about 12-ish pepper plants and they all did good but mad hatter was just stagnant and didn’t even flower, maybe a handful and only about 3 actually made fruit. The year before they started off well and wilted away so yeah 😞

My pepper growing background is weak, haha. I was trying to get into it last year, but it was a complete failure because something ate my starts overnight after I put them in the vegetable bed. I was so upset. But I am determined this year to have some successes and am doing a whole bed of peppers with protection from whatever critter liked them so much.

I am definitely going to look into that species, it sounds interesting! Which ones do you think are worth getting?

Regarding low-heat Capsicum baccatums, I grew Aji Habanero quite a few years ago and it was very mild and had a nice, fruity, sweet flavor. They are not as large as bells, Jimmy Nardellos, etc., so be aware of that. Someone sent me seeds for a type called Aji Guyana this year, they are a little longer and are said to be quite spectacular with low heat. I'll keep you posted on that.

Someone mentioned Aji Dulce above, they're very good. They are synonymous with Aji Cachucha, if you ever come across those. They are in the Capsicum chinense species, which includes habaneros, scotch bonnet peppers, etc. Two other nice peppers in that species that have a nice habanero flavor but are sweet are Trinidad Perfume and Habanada.

If you go with Lesya, be aware that they are also regarded as a very good paprika pepper, if you happen to have a dehydrator.
