When to air layer suckers?

This is the base of my Olympian tree. Normally, I would just cut all of this out. Now, being a card-carrying member of this forum, I’m going to try an air layer some or all of these. It is all completely unlignified new growth. When should I do it? End of the season or earlier?

@shevitz I'm glad to hear your card arrived in the mail. :)

I'd say you're ready as soon as they're big enough to get the vessel around them and strong enough that they won't break. You have a longer season so maybe worth waiting a few weeks for them to toughen up a bit.

Do remember, if they're far enough from the main trunk... you probably don't need to layer them. They will generally just root below ground and you can dig them up.

thanks! Didn’t think of that. I’ve got a lot going on down there. I don’t know if I can get them out or not, but I’ll certainly try that first.

Hey, that’s a good idea, we should get and distribute some Fig Fanatic business cards to put in our purses and wallets so we can more easily spread the addiction… er “hobby” to all of our unsuspecting acquaintances!!

I think I might have a template for that. I sent a bunch to the Staten Island Fig Fest. Let me have a look

Any one of those long enough you can set the 1G pot or tree pot that’s cut open around one of those suckers. Easy AL.

Heck yeah, more copies!
I have some shoots coming up in so many pots I let go just for AL...just need time to work on them.
