What is a good potting soil?

I am getting ready to up pot soon. I am looking for advice on the best budget friendly potting soil to use. I will have roughly 30 trees going into 1 gallon pots so I know it can get expensive quick. Thank you for any feedback!

I mentioned recently in another thread that I've had nothing but success with a quality triple mix purchased in bulk, with a healthy amount of perlite added. It'll work great and you wont be the first person to grow figs in living soil... but as I also mentioned, it's definitely heavier than bales of potting mix.

You're young and strong... you'll be fine! :)

I saw the other thread about an hour after posted this 😆 thank you so much for taking time to respond to this one too!

What 3 ingredients do you use? I tried looking it up and got different answers: 1- compost, peat moss, perlite. 2 - peat moss, perlite, vermiculite. 3 - topsoil, compost, peat moss. 4 - topsoil, peat moss, with either perlite, course sand, or vermiculite.

Around here it’s typically equal parts compost, top soil and peat moss. Perlite is only an add on. I don’t even add perlite for smaller pots since it drains fine. It just makes it lighter

Remember it is not just the ingredients, but at what percentage they have in the mix, is what you need to pay attention to.

e.g. We have a local potting mix here with 70% compost, 20% pine bark, 5% perlite, 2.5% peat, 2.5% hydro fiber, $60/yard

I wonder how much of the compost can remain after one season in TX.

If you want a light weight, heavy perlite potting mix you can also look for a local landscape or nursery supply company. Often they will blend to order. This sort of place. It's not as cheap as triple mix but it'll be lighter and still a lot cheaper than bales of promix etc

This one is in Canadian $

In any case it's always better to figure out a way to try and pick up. It's the delivery fees that really jack the price.

Start complaining to the big box stores to stock ProMix and when no one buys any it’ll be discounted at the end of the season. I got Peat Moss for $10 a bag at Walmart.

This is a real thing... I never thought of the "preemptive complaining" ... but end of the season I scour all the stores that carry SM#4 or HP and hunt for clearance deals or damaged bags, where I'll ask a manager if they can discount it. It's big, bulky stuff and a pain for them to store.

While we need it in the spring, the best time to buy this stuff is after the growing season.
