Weeds! 😡

No matter how much I pull them, they just seem to keep coming back. If I mulch they come straight through.

Anyone have any clever methods for preventing this from happening constantly? It’s so tedious..

Have you tried watering the soil before you pull? Dry soil always feels hard. Or use a hand held 3 prong fork like hoe to scrape it first? Any roots left in the soil seem to regrow. By the look of those weeds you’re putting some good fertilizer into your trees.

I have so many pots. For small weeds I made this DIY stirrup that’s ok for smaller weeds…. But it’s superficial. Sometimes I miss a dandelion. The two root is so deep they’re tough to get out without damaging roots

+1 for cedar mulch. the occasional weed will still break through but especially if you do a thick layer it will significantly reduce the number of weeds you get. also will help reduce your watering needs.

Yeah you’re right. In the first picture I didn’t see dandelions I saw a lot clover. Dandelions have a long tape root. Look on the bright side, dandelions actually put calcium into soil. I posted this a few days ago but maybe you missed it. After I watched this I look at dandelions in a better way. Think you will enjoy the info.

I had one I pulled outta the ground and put back in a pot. That’s the worst. It’s got a full head of grass…. 😆

Oh… the stirrup is just a hacksaw blade taped to a stick

I usually keep a pretty thick layer of cedar mulch on mine. Seems to work decently although an occasional weed still pops up. When you mow does yard waste get kicked in your pots?

It definitely kicks up weeds when I mow. The biggest issue I've had with mulch is it created a warm, damp environment for earwigs to move in. I mulched heavy one year and they were everywhere.... .

I’ve been happy with the bulk coir mats that I cut for my pots. They do a good job keeping the weeds out (and my top dress fertilizer in place) as well as help with moisture.

However, if anyone is planning on trying them, you should expect to have to replace them every season.

What happens to the coir after a season?

Here the 16x120 roll is about $30+ tx. Say, $35. I can get 7 out of a roll. I'd need roughly 100 of them times $5 each... I also have a bunch of pots larger than 16". Maybe worth it but I'd @9ah-figlet is saying the don't last, that's a lot of scratch for one season.

How big do they make scotch brite pads?
