WOW! That was an experience. I haven't tasted a great fig until now, and that was my first Black Madeira type. Up until now the best tasting figs from my collection were VdB and Mavra Sika. I don't have a refined palate so I can't even describe the taste very well but it taste like so many things. Delicious...

I can’t wait to taste my first Black Madeira or Black Madeira type!

I bet it makes the gears whir, click, and spin about how you can manage to ripen all those delicious late varieties in your zone! At least that’s how my brain works, lol.
Yes! I finally got a great one, and I have plenty of others that are going to swell up soon. I-258, CDD Roja, Strawberry Verte, Olympian, Schar Israel, VdS, and Dr Gowaty. But they are kinda small trees so there is not many on each tree. The most is probably 15 on one tree and Dr Gowaty only has 1 fig on it.

Congratulations! If your top figs up until now were VDB and Mavra Sika, not that they are bad figs, au contraire, they are very good, I am not surprised you were so impressed by Violeta. It's in a different league entirely. Some figs are one-dimensional. They can be very tasty. Sweet. Delicious when properly ripened. You'd think they are as good as it gets if that's all you've tried. But then you try a two-dimensional fig, and it changes your perception. Then you try a three-dimensional, multi-dimensional fig, with layers upon layers of flavors. Your mind is blown. You start to look at one-dimensional figures very differently. So does your palate. It becomes pickier, more selective :)

IMHO, not being able to describe the taste doesn't mean you don't have a refined palate. Not all of us have a way with words. Me neither, and it's totally fine. But when I put a great fig in my mouth, I know it's great right away.

Yeah when I taste it, there is a lot going on. Multi-dimensional is a good word for it. It makes me want to only grow figs like that now, on big mature trees, loaded down with so many figs I have to prop up the branches.

:) I am so familiar with that feeling. And I am moving in that direction full speed.

Yeah, kind of... LOL I am getting there... My logic is that if I must headstart my fig trees and I have a limited number of spots, shouldn't I grow only the best tasting, most productive figs that ripen well here? E.g. BNR, BG, Angelito, Borda Barraquer, or I-258? :)

I was wondering about the color on the necks. I've seen pics of BM types with both green and reddish necks. I am guessing it has to do with how much direct sunlight is on the fig when it is ripening. Mine is growing in a bucket and I rotated it so that the figs were in direct sunlight.

I was hoping these figs would be larger. I guess because it's a small 1st year tree and maybe they will be larger next year. I don't think my I-258 are going to be very big either. Seems like that's a common theme with young trees, atleast for me anyways. My 2nd year LSU Gold were only 20 grams. I'm going to change my fertilizer next year to a more balanced NPK. I was giving them pretty high nitrogen. Maybe that has something to do with it.
