Up-Potting Trees and Vacillating on Pot Size

Hello Fellow Fig Fanatics!

I've got a collection of about 16 trees, 15 of them in 5-gallon pots. I'm planning on giving away a few and downsizing my collection but putting the keepers in larger pots. Some of them are unknowns but are all of them are fantastic and I'd like to increase the harvest, grow bigger and healthier trees, and reduce the need to water every 15 minutes in the hottest days of summer.

At my age and fitness level, I'm strong enough to easily move 10-gallon pots and don't tend to move them much to begin with, but I know that 7-gallon pots are easier to move if needed so that's a strong plus. 10 years from now, moving them might be a different story. I have read the 10 figs per gallon rule but tend to think that's a bit of an overestimation unless there are ideal conditions with watering and fertilizing. I'm wondering if any of you who are experienced with either or both sizes could weigh in on the pros and cons of 7 vs. 10-gallon pots in terms of mobility, harvest, and feeding/watering demand? In short, my heart is saying to go 10 gallons, but my brain is pushing me to the conservative side of 7 gallons :)

My collection of trees that I'm keeping, for reference and in case it helps with any feedback (trees are 3-5 years old):

Geno's UNK Calabrian Honey
Vincenzo's UNK Mt. Etna
Naples Dark UNK
Kristy's UNK Mt. Etna
Samantha's UNK Jordanian
Smith
Green Michurinska
Mimmo UNK Mt. Etna
Dan's UNK Italian Honey (Latarulla type)
Blue Celeste
Pellegrino
JH Adriatic

Many thanks for any help or input you can provide!

I had the same mental exercise a few months ago and decided to go with the GroPro 8 gallon pots, which I'm told really only hold 7 gallons of mix. Since I will have to shuffle them every year, I figured smaller trees and pots were better for my back.

I’m in the same boat! About to turn 70 soon and trying to think ahead when I can no longer be lifting 50 lb bags of mulch- or be forgetting to turn off the water! Haha! Trying to put everything on a drip watering system with timer. Plus, have you seen the ‘plant’ dolly? Or the large box dolly? Both would make moving the large pots back and forth to the greenhouse much easier! Saw one at a local fig swap and was so impressed! Didn’t know they made those.

Thanks everyone for your input so far! I'm actually leaning towards doing a mix at this point.

I built two platform dollies for my Rocoto peppers last year, which were in 7 to 10 gallon grow bags and got huge. They were very helpful to get into and out of the garage!

If you have someone to assist, this can be useful

On the watering front, might I suggest drip irrigation? It would help with the watering issue, at least, regardless of which pots you go with. The simplest setups have knobs for length of watering and number of times per 24-hour period. When it gets hot you can easily just up the duration or number of waterings or both, with a twist of a knob.
