The Rats Are Real

I managed to catch 4 wood rats with the havahart traps. Nothing in the traps for 36 hours since the last one and cheese is still there. I know it's not a final solution, but it's probably good enough for this year. I'm going to leave the traps set until I remove the trees from storage.

Put peanut butter on the cheese. The smell is very strong and attracts them from a distance. Marshmallows also work

Barn cats have worked wonders on my uncle's farm! He has all of them spayed/neutered, except for a pair that he allows to breed every few years, so no uncontrolled breeding. His horses completely ignore them, which is great. Those cats are like Terminators (or Daleks for Dr. Who fans) when it comes to rats and mice.

Yes I know the Daleks. They were really cool. I became a Dr. Who fan back in the 70’s during the the Tom Baker era. He still remains my favorite.

@rnexus I am SO sorry that happened to you. That is just heat breaking! Rodents are horrid. My mother's inground fig is next to a massive Forsythia bush that some rodents live in. Probably rabbits, but who knows. I walked by the fig last weekend and all the bark under 12" is gone. Just white wood.
