The big sale is here!

I’m afraid to ask but what’s Cherry Bomb like? Don’t know anyone up here who grows it
@TorontoJoe I know you're not on FB so you're not seeing the drama there. Cherry Bomb is the current promotion of Cajun Dan. He's the only one that has it, and he is currently selling it for $100.00 US per cutting. He created a group under the name Fig Doctor in order to promote the variety. There are 15k members of the group, many green newbies and they are completely falling for snake oil sales pitch.

Facebook has its positives and negatives for sure, but ive met, learned, and traded with some of you which has helped me out tremendously.
I can't really knock FB. I'm not there so I can't truly be critical. Just a personal decision.

@TorontoJoe He is promoting it like it's the best thing since sliced bread, he is the only one who has it in the whole universe and it's taste and hardiness are like no other.

I called him on it so I was sent packing. lol

Just out of curiosity, I googled LSU Cherry Bomb and was directed to a rather amusing thread about it on growingfruit.org from 2024. I actually laughed out loud a few times as I read it. It got a little spicy 🤣

Does LSU not take exception to people naming figs that were taken from their property without permission?

I don't care what people charge for something... but sticking LSU's name on it? There are fig names I can't even mention on this forum without getting cease and desist orders.

I dont know if the name is LSU Cherry bomb, or he calls it Cherry bomb telling everyone it is one of LSU's lost varieties.

Oh wow! I've been so busy getting ready for the sale and shipping out orders that I haven't been on here. My apologies. It is nice when you stumble upon a group of people talking about you and they are saying nice things. Y'all just made my day. Thank you.

I only want to say this about the Cherry Bomb BS. 1.) I already have Celeste and/or O'Rourke so that's a hard pass. It looks like O'Rourke 2.) In horticulture, the name of the institution, in this case LSU, is normally added only to cultivars that are official releases and the seller pays a small licensing fee for each one they sell. (For example, -the pawpaw cultivars bred by KSU.) Unofficial releases do not. Here in figdom, it seems that anybody who wants to can tack "LSU" onto a fig. If the LSU program were still active, they would have the right to pursue legal action, which stop a lot of this mess.

I wanted to add that I absolutely LOVE Lebanese Red (Bass). It is my mother's all-time favorite fig. We put our 4-year-old tree in the ground in spring of 2023. In January of 2024, we had a polar vortex event that devastated our orchard. That tree was one of 4 that completely died. (That should not be taken to mean that it is particularly cold-sensitive since it was not yet established.) I ordered a new tree directly from Bass, as Ktrain suggested. This tree grows very slowly, and seems like a possible dwarf. I don't know whether it is genetically a dwarf tree or if it is simply dwarfed due to the amount of fruit that it sets. I can say it is prolific! The tree sets fruit abundantly at every node and the node spacing is close together. Perhaps in a few years I will be able to offer cuttings again, but it will be a while at the least. Darn good fig, though. I hope you get it.

I’ll send you one for free- pay for shipping?
I just saw this. How awesome! This is why I love our community here. Kudos to you!

Can I ask how your tree has grown for you? I'm curious how your experience compares to what I just said above (#36)

Similar, actually. Thought it was because it doesn’t receive quite as much sun as it should, but after reading your post I wonder if it’s just a slow grower.

The Ave. V #1 looks like White Marseille / Byadi, at least in the same grouping.

I do not grow either of those two figs, so I can't speak to that specifically. I can tell you that Ave. V #1 is an unknown that was originally grown in Brooklyn, NY. It was found released by Danny at Figbid. When he lived in there, he would offer to prune family heirloom trees in exchange for cuttings. This one is an Italian Honey style of fig, so it is likely similar to those, but the seed crunch is very pronounced.

There do not seem to be a lot of people growing this one, and I can't imagine why not. But it is interesting to know you are seeing the same thing. I think it might be a good one for people with small spaces. It seems to stay small and is super productive. Here's some tree pix from 2021 of the first tree I had at 2 years old. That was the first year it loaded up like this and I was amazed. You can see how close the nodes are together. Best part is that it doesn't drop the fruit. I pretty much ripens them all. That's a lot of production.
