The $1000 fig tree

It was cessac and we got it for like 50 bucks.

@AAAJacks @PapaFig I actually didnt know you two were a partnership. I would love to hear/read more about your partnership. I am certainly very curious about the home base Orchard particulars that you would care to share with us.

I have a gardening partner named Sean. We have been partnered up for more than a year. We met on another Horticultural platform where we were both new members. We had a lot of similarities as we were both in our first year of growing figs. LOL age was certainly not one of them, as I am much older than Sean. For personal reasons he has not joined this platform, and is not currently active on any platform. Though Sean certainly deserves credit for having helped in the new member cutting giveaway this year. So we certainly have some similarities as we have 200 ft Greenhouse that we both share on the property. As well as well over 300 plus fig trees in various States of growth. Since my home base Orchard has some similarities I would love to hear the details you are willing to share about your shared Horticultural projects.

Probably this would be more appropriate in a new thread because we are trying to organize a shared grafting, and propagation project together with our FigFanatic membership on this thread. But I would love to learn more about your home-based Orchard project. Maybe on another thread but LOL I am fascinated.

That's a good point. We donated a figoin cutting to the figbid fundraiser when they were going for $200 to the St. Jude fundraiser - that would be a great aspect (a portion of the profits) to incorporate IMO.

St. Jude's is so easy to get behind, helping sick kids really hits a nerve with me (like most people), but I bet there are a lot (of worthy causes) that don't have the name/donations that might need the money even more and might make better use of it.

It sounds like $200 is the ante for this thing so far, and I'm down with that.

@TorontoJoe is there a way to take this thread to private group of "trusted" forum members? Maybe invite only?
You could do a group PM

200 ft greenhouse?…. Now I’m green with envy 👍

There’s another way of looking at this. For those like Ed…. The newest hot, expensive and rare figs are what he enjoys. This has absolutely nothing to do with whether it’s good…. He’s never tried it and has no idea… It is exactly that idea of having something new and expensive and rare and as he put it “luxurious“ that is fun for him… And for a lot of other people too. If every fig were sold for the same flat rate, that whole aspect of enjoying the hobby would disappear. Had S33 not been highly valued the interest would not have been there… The actual fig had very little to do with it. It’s the buzz. This is the “collector” side of the hobby

Just food for thought….

I just look at it like growing up with Pokémon cards 😂 the amount of money spent to collect them all is outrageous but every kid talked their parents into buying more. Cards in reality were worthless but the kids were so happy to have them that parents spent the money. The only value was to other collectors.

Spot on! My kid has a crazy collection apparently worth more than my figs…. And I can’t eat them! 😂

I agree 100% but in the long term once the hype and adrenaline is gone. One can have buyers remorse and can get discharged. Especially if our income changes. What does the decision look like 2 years down the road. My friend spent a lot of money on a fig variety when it was hot. He told me it was the worst purchase he had ever made. He couldn't even stand looking at the thing a few years later and threw it out.

Regarding Kremp and their prices I have ordered from Chad a few times and like working with them. When I ask the cost this is what he said.

PapaFig : for clarification the syndicate/fellowship consept in this Figfanatic based thread is being put forward to propigate rare/expensive fig cuttings/trees at a risk/cost spread method NOT TO recoup initial cost but to spread out the propigated cuttings back to the initial fellowship members for there propigation going forward at no added cost for personal consumption and forum /charity fund raisers AND GIVE AWAYS ..BEYOND THIS I WOULD SUGEST FELLOWSHIP MEMBERS KISS THERE INITIAL $ GOOD BY ,AS A STARTING POINT !MORE PROFIT MOTIVATED MEMBERS CAN FORM "FOR PROFIT" SYNDICATES IF THEY WANT ????? MAYBE ON A PRIVATE FORMAT ???????

This is good words. My understanding was there was no profit but possible losses to the original purchaser group to allow a discounted purchase price, or more spread the financial burden across several members. Initially the variety is available only to those that put some money into it, then a year later the other members could buy/receive from the investment group at a steep discount also. It’s gambling as a team in a sense to better the community.

I had the same thought.

I concur with the thoughts expressed by member @Fig Gazer in this post. Though I certainly wouldn't pull my support if this goes in some other direction. I think this type of ((Fellowship)) could be replicated more than one time, and for more than one reason. I also liked @MattK statement that he would reach out to Ed to see if he might have an interest in joining our group.

@TorontoJoe, I totally agree with you. And that sentiment also plays out within the sales history of S33. There is a Grower/Seller that openly likes to express his vast knowledge of figs that sold a whole mature tree and all the cuttings of said tree in separate auctions just a season ago. And here recently he wrote that he needed to get the variety again, Why? well now it has value, is it because its a great fig or because other people want it?

I personally see no problem with trees or cuttings selling for thousands of dollars. We are all adults. Figs are luxury item, they arent needed for survival. Gouging only happens when its items that are essential get driven up to unobtainable prices for no real reason.
There are only so many buyers willing to spend $1000, as is all the price points $500, $200, $100, $50 all the way down to the people that will only grow freebies.

Just a side point. It may seem silly to some, but it’s a real thing. I’ve seen in the past where discussions like this could actually get heated… with people taking sides and becoming quite angry. I’m so proud of the fact that we can be here and have differences of opinion, while remaining respectful of one another. This is such a great group!

Thank you! 👏

"THE $1000 FIG TREE THREAD FELLOWSHIP" By my count we currently have 4 members that have commited $ to this group .I suggest as a practicle matter we close this first group and move the logistics to a series of private messages (ie .who holds $ and makes purchase? ,which fig varietys, who does propigation etc. ) current members Figless,Figologist,PapaFig,Fig Gazer chime in if i missed your $200 comitment . Please start new fellowships if you want as a practicale matter if a fellow ship buys one cutting it is difficult to propigate enough sion wood in a season to generate more than 4 standard cuttings for the members in a year hence 4 member initial limit ?

@all y'all
Perhaps for us to make a little progress in the name of consensus maybe we should start a list of varieties we are interested in acquiring for our platform FigFanatic?
We already have Sicilian 33, Green Goblin, Jolly Rancher, and Angelito. It might be a great idea to see what else we could be grafting. I also might point out that varieties I wanted to acquire to propagate for the membership have already slipped out of my hands due to the insane price escalation.

BTW any chance of signing up our ((Rich Texas)) friend? I'd love to see them as a member of FigFanatic. I could think of 13 ways past Sunday that we could easily accomplish this.

Add Ondata to the list .
