It’s freezing cold here and more snow coming, but I’m dreaming of fresh strawberries!šŸ“ šŸ“šŸ“

I just ordered some Yambu strawberries which are super cool since they don’t have a white core, are red all the way through, and even have a higher productivity than Honeye.

But, I also really want Mara de Bois strawberries, and I can’t find them bare root anywhere from someone reputable. Will anyone here have any for sale or know of a good place that doesn’t charge an arm and a leg for shipping?

I grew strawberries for the first time two years ago. I didn't know what I was doing but I wanted to try and everbearing. I went to a pick-your-own farm just out of the city with my kid to pick some. I figured they probably grow something pretty productive given they're a business. And I figured it would grow well since it's near me... While there I asked them for a piece of a runner that was sitting on some straw. I don't think they thought I was serious but they gave it to me. Last year it grew well and spread. I'm hoping it'll pump out some serious berries this year.

I have no idea what variety it is

Aren’t fresh garden grown strawberries so amazing tasting, compared to grocery store strawberries? There is literally no comparison. It’s like comparing them to cardboard.

That amazing strawberry scent from even just picking and handling the strawberries from the garden is so intense. And that flavor!!! Yum!! šŸ˜‹

There's no comparison... Grocery store anything has become meh at best. I think if we lose the ability to grow food and feed ourselves... the best case is that we're doomed to fruit that just doesn't taste good... the worst case... I have no idea.

I bought 50 for $50 or so from HandPickedNursery on Etsy! They’re out of stock right now, unfortunately. After these storms, I can check to see if mine set runners out :)
Pretty sure that’s who Millennial Gardner recommended too. They are from NC too. I bought strawberries from their website couple of years ago.

I grew up in a strawberry growing area in CA. It supplies most of the US. While I can’t speak to the nutrition, strawberries are like figs, in that the ones you get in the store are unripened, pale rocks for storage/shipping. The same farms who supply the strawberries for this market often sell their ripe berries locally through farmer’s markets which is where I used to buy them and they were fragrant and of excellent eating quality.

Did you mean Yambu instead of Nambu?

I’ll be growing Darselect, Malwina, and Flavorfest this year.

Yes, lol. I’ll fix it.

I looked at Flavorfest, which also looks good.

When I looked up Darselect, it said it’s for ā€œexperienced growersā€. I wonder why?

Malwina looks like a great option for a late berry.

Are you by chance buying from Nourse, now Johnny’s?

I got asparagus from hand picked nursery. Theyre arriving today. Ill let you know. Expanding my patch from 20 to 50.

I got seascape and Charlotte strawberries. I really want the Afghan banana ones from ogw....

I dont reallt like strawberries to be honest but theyre nice ground cover.

Thanks, I have never bought from handpicked, and I want to do an asparagus patch here in my new garden, too.

Pics would be awesome, if you wouldn’t mind please and thank you.

The area of my combined asparagus/strawberry patch has strawberry growing great under the asparagus. My dogs seem to have peed the pure strawberry part to death so I am adding asparagus in order to maybe protect it? Since they seem to thrive under thr asparagus even though my dogs pee there too lol

I’m buying from Pense. I have bought from Nourse before back when they were doing direct to consumer sales.

I’m not sure why they are saying that about Darselect. Guess I’ll find out. It said that it is more susceptible to leaf diseases, but I’m not worried about it. All three will be new for me. Ordered 25 plants of each. Malwina is ā€œlateā€ but only by about a week it says behind the others. Previously I have grown Seascape, Chandler, Albion, and Merced.

I bought some Sweet Charlie strawberries from Hand Picked Nursery in the fall. Hopefully will get some good tasting ones come May.
